Husband is sitting out in the elements at Marshalltown for a doubleheader in softball. (No press box) You can hear the wind howling across the mic. (weather.gov says 21 mph with 30 mph gusts) Then, he either got sunscreen or dust in his eye, causing him to call the game with one eye. THEN! For some reason this year, his "occasional" seasonal allergies have turned into full-blown allergies. He's sniffing every other sentence. Yes, he took an OTC non-drowsy antihistamine. But, he didn't take it until he got there. Yep...he's a mess.
Oh...and I played this as a bumper coming back from commercial early in game one...
I was in radio right after I graduated from ISU, and I can remember doing lots of play-by-play for local sports. Girls' softball was one of my favorites - but I have respiratory allergies too, and occasionally I'd get a snootful of some sort of pollen and start sneezing. No way to cut the mic, of course, so I had to hold my hand over it and lean away. Didn't always get the job done, though. That was good for lots of comments from our listeners.
