I’m that guy where, when a lane is closing and people are supposed to zipper merge, if people keep trying to zoom past and up in the other lane, I’ll just pull into it and continue at the same speed I was going before so people can’t cut. Not once have I ever had the car that was originally behind me in the lane people are supposed to merge in to not let me back in to the merge lane once the closing lane officially closed. I have had one car drive into a ditch to still go around me once, though.

Girl who was a year behind me had a dad who is a major contractor in Iowa and Minnesota. They had a three level garage and had an elevator with a turntable to move the show cars up and down.

Back home in Ohio one of my friend's Dad had the same thing but he founded a manufacturing company so it was all classic muscle cars as cliché as that sounds.

The oldest son (my friend) turned out alright even with all that money, his twin sister kinda became a spoiled brat. The other two kids turned out fine too so I think she was just the oddity. Parents were stellar regardless.

It was still funny every once in a while a random tidbit would show their wealth without realizing it. Like the one time my friend wanted to see Harry Potter for his birthday party. The parents rented out the whole theater for him. He didn't think anything of it. Even for a special event, that's a pricy one.

Cowgirl I would recommend you not read this post and just forget about it.

My niece would've been 15 today. She died of SIDS after 7 days. I couldn't fully comprehend what this was when I was only 10 but remembering she would be 15 today just boggles my mind.

You're doing it wrong. People are supposed to be in both lanes up to the point where the merge starts. It increases traffic flow.

You saying you would park your car in the basement?

This seemed highly relevant.

I learned to drive in Chicago and my girlfriend thinks I'm a bad driver... when in reality I am an aggressive driver who knows how to highway drive.

Unfortunately, most garages end up just becoming extra storage. Most of the tikme you're lucky if you're able to get just one car in there. It's even worse here in Texas, since we don't have basements.
I have only had one rule - MY CAR GOES IN THE GARAGE IN THE WINTER. If Lew wanted to scrape windows, that was on him. He has been pretty good about keeping that promise. :)

I learned to drive in the Chicago area, and husband had some learning experience there, too. There's "crazy" driving, a useful skill, and bad driving. Crazy driving is in high traffic areas taking the spot when it's open when you need to change lanes, even if it's a little small. (Still use your turn signal, though) Bad driving is there being only two cars within 3/4 of a mile heading in one direction on a four-lane highway, and you speed up all the way to tailgate the one car, change lanes quickly to pass, speed by, then cut off the car you just passed as you get back into the right lane.

Bad driving, IMO, also includes using cruise in heavy traffic. Don't do that.

Wedding reception Sat. Nite it was fun. Work Sun with nice 7-8 mile ride to slow roll then same back to my car which I had parked at the bike shop to make for a longer ride. Well one more day in Mn than back to Iowa.

The problem with most zipper merges is that the traffic has slowed to a crawl, and you still have people driving as far up in the left-hand lane as possible, expecting some kind soul to let them in. Had this going on last week in the Twin Cities where 494 east merges with 94 in Woodbury.....the traffic was backed up for over a mile, and we were moving at about 5 MPH. If I had to deal with that on an everyday basis I'd be an alcoholic.

The **** it does. It causes me to sit there and not move because the people in front of me are letting everyone in.

A properly executed zipper merge is efficient. However, very rarely do they run correctly.

This is corny, but helpful. This was new info to me, but I agree we all need to learn it's proper to merge late!

Seeing how people merge in parking lots, you can tell who the jackwagons are who mess everything up. Some will weave through openings in the parking lines and then try to jump the front rows into the line. I always allow a decent amount in unless I can tell this joker was doing that, then I will almost glue my bumper to the guy infront of me.

Zipper merges are just another thing for engineers to say it works perfectly when the reality is there are too many variables and egos involved for it to work properly.
