People just don't like to own up to things they're caught red-handed at.
We really drummed it into our boys that their lives would be much easier if they didn't lie to us...particularly when it came to vehicle damage, as Lew is really REALLY good at reading dents & scrapes.
We finally realized it had made an impact with the oldest one living with us. We had taken two vehicles to another town to watch their sister in her high school musical (it was bloody awful, but we won't go into that). Anyhoo, the boys (four of them, ages 18, 18, 17 & 14) were getting really restless, and the oldest wasn't feeling all that sharp, so at intermission he asked if he could go home, and the other three immediately begged to go with him. We agreed. They took the Yugo (yes, a Yugo!!!) home and we stayed for the second half. When we got home, they were all asleep, and the Yugo had a radiating crack in the middle of the windshield. We thought bird or maybe small deer.
The next morning we asked what happened. Son said, well, we were driving back roads and [brothers] all had different opinions on which route we should take. My head was hurting and they wouldn't shut up and I swung my fist and the windshield got in the way!"
We were laughing so hard we couldn't get mad at him!
His punishment was helping Lew replace the windshield.
