Random Thoughts VIII: The Ocho

Hmm, you may not want to offer, some people actually live close enough to take you up on that.

My nephew will be at ISU next fall and I have already informed him he may he called upon for taxi and babysitting duties in exchange for homemade food and free laundry. He will most likely be in a fraternity (he knows which one), not sure how the food is there.
Greek House Chefs are pretty good overall. Although nothing compares to a home cooked meal. Haven't had one cooked from mom since May.

Don't most fraternities have chefs that were trained in Europe?

Last night was my first night handing out candy for Trick or Treaters.

I had some "interesting" costumes and some with no costume at all. Far too many without jokes as well.

Some kids were WAY too old to be out there. If you can drive, you shouldn't trick or treat.

...AND GET OFF MY LAWN!!!!

Actually, though, I agree with some of that. Little kids in political costumes bug me - they're wearing what their parents want, not what they want. Not bothering with a costume is annoying as well - if they can't be bothered, why should I reward that? The joke thing doesn't bug me at all, not being a Des Moines native. :)

Teenagers trick or treating seems a bit over the top also, especially if they don't bother with costumes. If they're escorting little siblings, though, I used to give them an extra candy bar even if they weren't actually "trick-or-treating". I would do it just because they were giving up their time so that their sibs could have fun. You HAVE to reward that. :)

We're trick or treating tonight. I'm down to only one kid trick or treating. This really makes me feel old.

I bought trick or treat candy last week. Ate most of it.

Suppose I should make a grocery run this afternoon on the outside chance anyone comes to my place. Deadend street, no sidewalks, no street lights = no trick or treaters (usually, but if I have no candy I would expect a horde).

I didn't have to go through the slow trickle of trick or treat ending.
My boys were only 19 months apart, and due to b-day spacing were one grade apart. When the older one was in jr high (7th) he decided he was too old. The younger one (in 6th) couldn't bear being the "baby", so he quit also. Peer pressure, dontcha know? :D

We used to get a couple hundred when we lived in town. Now that we're rural, we've had about 3 over the last 13 years. And that family moved away. I always have it on hand, just in case. If it's still there at Thanksgiving, visiting kids & grandkids pretty much polish it off.

Brought some to the gamewatch Saturday in case we had any families with kids (plus Cyclone coloring pages). No families, no kids, just a dozen older die hard fans. Gave the candy away to some kids near us (asked the parental units first, didn't want to be the creepy candyman guy).

The 13yr old legit wants to trick-or-treat and she has her costume. I don't think many of her friends are, there are classmates having a bonfire tonight instead. She will go out t-o-t'ing with the 11yr old. That leaves me or hubby to take the little ones out and one of us will stay home to pass out candy.

There is only 1 house in the neighborhood where the guy makes kids do a "trick"/tell a joke. He always gives out hot chocolate packets, so the girls like going there. Quite a few houses who do full-sized candy bars. And within a 2 block radius we now have 4 dentists so they usually come home with 2-3 new toothbrushes (attached to candy).

I'm glad for her - and going out with her sister...bonus!
I'm thinking more about the 15, 16, 17 year olds when I'm talking about teenagers - more of the high school types. :)

Think I stumbled into a family spat in my research this morning while reading a letter from a wife to her husband. They both traveled around a lot doing abolition meetings.

He apparently challenged her handling of money. She noted that, and stated that she only had $560 left for her planned travels (in the 1840s).

Since I'm bad with translating money figures, I went looking for things, because this sounded like a lot of cash. Apparently, carpenters at the time could expect to make $1 a day on a good project (like the Erie Canal), so she's got a lot of cash.

These two lived in Worcester, MA. She "offered" towards the end of the letter to stay in Salem for the rest of the summer if the money wasn't enough. Now I wonder who she knew in Salem, because getting from Salem to Worcester wouldn't be that difficult or expensive even then.

There you go. This doesn't fit into anything else, but a fun little anecdote from a morning of staring at letters filled with inconsistent handwriting from one lady who got really ticked off.

Taking LittleWx to a couple family members houses and that is about it. Jokes don't happen here just give the kids candy and send them on their way. Back when we were growing up my parents would get well over a hundred kids. The whole area was younger families. I think the last few years the count has been in the 20s.

I think our neighborhood was pretty active last night. We missed the first half because we were out with the older boys in their mom's neighborhood.

Always fun walking around with the ex-wife. Yay!

We left out a bowl of candy and it was gone by the time we got home. Refilled it and got a decent number of kids coming by before the end of the night.

Caleb is a mature 9 year old so he had to be something scary. He was a demon grim reaper.

Grady is an immature 7 year old. He went as a mail man, complete with stuffed animal dogs sewn to his pant legs. I have to give the ex-wife credit for this one. It was cute.

Owen was a pretty adorable little pumpkin.
