Random Thoughts VIII: The Ocho

Weird thing happened today. I got a call from a phone number in the San Antonio area. I picked up, but no one said anything and they hung up. Next (like 5 seconds later), my wife gets a call from the same number and the same thing happens. My wife then decides to call the number back and she just gets a message that "this MagicJack user is currently not accepting any calls".

Three things:

1. At first I thought it was a telemarketer, but I would doubt that they would call each of us in succession.
2. We only know one person in San Antonio (former co-worker of my wife's), but she would not have my phone number and the number on the phone did not match hers anyway.
3. Weird that somebody would call both of us, not say anything, hang up, and then not be able to receive calls.

I don't think I've shared this before, but Baby GTO was born with a heart murmur and today he had an echo and an EKG and the doctor said it is benign and nothing to worry about going forward. best piece of news I got all day.

I have a heart murmur. Other than my heart ocassionally feeling like its about to burst out of my chest few seconds every once in a while, it's fine. It feels like it misses a beat, then pumps extra hard to catch up.

On a bit of sad news, my company laid off 2% of the workforce across all divisions. Our department did not have anyone laid off, but a few other people we work with did get the ax. Just the day before, a co-worker of my wife got fired and Mrs. GTO's boss announced she is leaving for another job.

Crazy timing.

Pants - have you ever experienced sleep paralysis? If you have, what did your mind create as an explanation?

I have not, but I did read statistically the more knowledge you have of it, the more likely you are to experience it. It sounds terrifying from what I've read about it.

I think you need to get into a deep REM sleep to experience it. I don't stay asleep long enough to ever get to that point.

I've had it twice in my lifetime. Was just curious to see how your brain handled it. My first time (when I lived in an off campus apartment in Ames), I woke up surrounded by about 8-10 dark figures around my bed. I wanted to move and scream, but could not move or do anything at all. Just felt like I was screaming on the inside. After what seemed like 10 minutes, I fell asleep again and literally woke up screaming in the morning..

The second time, was about 4 years later when I lived in Des Moines. I again woke up in the middle of the night and could not move or scream. Really weird long faced, glowing red eyed figure staring at me outside my window. It wouldn't move, just kept staring at me with this piercing gaze. Same as before, I think I feel back to sleep, but can't remember if I woke up just a few minutes later or next day. Ever since then, I will not sleep by the window.

The worst thing about the whole deal is that I never knew sleep paralysis was a thing back then. It was all very vivid and felt more real than just a dream, so I just though maybe something really happened to me. Only about 3 years ago did I realize what it was and how your brain will create these messed up images to explain the fact that you're in a state between wakefulness and sleep and you can't move.

So essentially, your brain can't comprehend why it doesn't have control of your body, so it generates a scene, no matter how unrealistic, to try to come up with an outside source of why it doesn't? Interesting. A little bit like phantom limb syndrome, is what it sounds like.
