Congrats on the retirement, Boxster. By my count, I only have 35 years left to go.

I'd also like to be done in about 35 but mint.com tells me nah, it'll be 46.

probably doesn't help that I only have my own 401k linked and not Dh's.

So Terex suddenly laid off all of it's employees (well everyone other than accounting) in Waverly yesterday. Basically just said at 2:30 PM that it was closing that day for good. They get 60 days pay though. My wife when she heard that "Well that sounds familiar".

I saw people posting about that yesterday on facebook. My neighbor growing up had worked there, went through a layoff in the 90s and then moved his family to Milwaukee. I always thought they were up and down through the years as a company. Sucks for everyone that was employed there, though.

They make heavy equipment so they will always be up and down. Miss on a couple of sales and there goes a whole year. Feel for them though. My wife thinks I have never really fully faced what happened to me.

Is that the place with the cranes or whatever off to the left when you come into town on 3 from the east?

I have never been on that side of town but looks right and the description fits.

Speaking of retirements...my parents turn 60 this year so the discussion is always there. My mom has worked in education pretty much since she was 22ish including 25 at her current school (with no recognition but that is a story for another day). She is now the oldest one in the building and more and more of the staff is my age which although not a huge issue wears on her some. She also has no support from the administration and seems like she is always complaining. I am trying to stay supportive because I know she loves helping the kids but there was a WTF moment when my dad told me she would make more from IPERS in retirement than she currently does. Kind of a if you are so tired of it retire and make more money kind of a thing to me.

I also wonder if the fact that she is the youngest of four and none of her siblings have retired has anything to do with it.

Ah, last working lunch in St. Paul Skyway. Got panhandled in the food court. Almost panhandled by the same guy walking back to work. So, who the hell carries small bills for panhandlers anyway? I am almost 100% credit card.

And the skyway resident schizophrenics will be missed. Heard what I thought was a couple arguing moving down the skyway yesterday. Nope, just loud animated lady talking to herself. She paused briefly to shout at the iPhone poster outside the restaurant I was eating at. She might have been yelling at the guy in the picture.

Ah, downtown!

Interesting news getting even interestingier (I pulled a CG there and made that word up.)

Also, congrats Boxster!

You pulled one over on us and that was actually dressed as a 70 year old man? Who am I kidding? With your ego you would have made them hire Ryan Gosling to play you.

I'm a year or so older than your folks. Here's my dilemma - our health insurance is through my job, and spouse doesn't have much options where he's at (to speak of). And 13 years ago we sold the house that was paid off and bought an acreage. Don't get me wrong, we wouldn't do it differently if we could - we love our home. Practical math, however, says that if I retire now and we live off my retirement & his income, we can pay health insurance premiums, or we can pay the mortgage. Doing both is not likely, and could greatly deplete our retirement so that we wouldn't be able to travel like we plan to do. So, until we're eligible for Medicare (he's 3 months older than me) or we pay off the house, I keep working. I love my job...it's my boss that makes it stressful (my ninth in 32 years at the same job). Sooo...4-1/2 more years. :)

Maybe your folks have the same concerns...or similar?

To an extent that is at play. Their home is paid for and their only (current) debt is my dad's car which should be paid for in a year or so. He has 5-7 years left unless it kills him first. He reports to the VP and that guy is the ultimate "we must be lean and produce 2x as much as we have ever before without spending a penny more" (which is not lean but whatever). He would like to get out of management and just work and enjoy it and check out to enjoy life at the end of the day but I don't see him actually doing that. Said employer also keeps cutting and getting stricter on who they will cover on insurance so that very much may be in play.
