We took a spring break trip to Arizona a couple of years ago. The I-80 stretch through Nebraska was the only stretch we allowed the kids to watch a movie. They didn't complain or even really miss it the rest of the trip, but that stretch through Nebraska just seemed cruel to put them through.

Oh man that stretch is long and boring. Though I did find it interesting to think about when Native Americans were there and it started to get homesteaded. So vast. The small hills to the north at some point as you get further west were pretty. Probably just excited for something not flat as hell.

We've talked about taking a vacation but haven't picked anywhere. I've been liking the idea of somewhere Carolinas but probably getting late for that now to do yet this summer/early fall. Probably take baby with us though I think DH is itching for a no-baby trip. Don't really have overnight babysitters we'd want to do yet. Ugh, I suppose baby on a plane would suck though, so active right now.

I think the worst part for a baby on a plane is if their ears start hurting from the air pressure change. Something that affects me on occasion. It would be awful for a baby because they have no idea what is going on, they just know it hurts really bad.

I was on a flight once where a young couple had a baby and it was a flight where my ears were really bothering me during descent. The baby started crying loudly and the mother and father looked so helpless. I was across the aisle so I had a good seat for it. Another woman got up and turned around and looked. She then realized what that must have looked like to the parents and apologized telling them she wasn't being judgmental and was just looking and wondering if there was something she might be able to do to help.

After we landed and we were waiting to deplane the father said he was sorry to me. I told him not to worry because babies cry.

You have NO idea how many times I made the trip from Washington to Texas across much of that same flat-ass territory. No DVD's back then. We read a lot of books. Sang songs with my mother (four-part harmony...pretty cool, actually). We played cards. We WHINED.... ;)
Yeah, I am disappointed in many people with the DVD players. My BIL's kids can't get in the car even to drive to the store or a couple of miles to school without the video player coming on. We don't even break the thing out unless we are taking a trip of three hours or more. Even then it isn't always on.

We never had anything like that either when I was a kid.

Babies cry because their ears feel the pressure - but letting them cry helps them equalize (like you or I popping our jaw or yawning or chewing gum. If you can get them sucking a pacifier or a bottle, the swallowing also helps.

One of our sons is the same way with the short, medium, long trips. His children are basically uninterested in anything outside the window. This is also the couple that doesn't let their children go anywhere without adult supervision - DIL is a school volunteer and eats lunch with one or the other most days. One of them just got her learner's permit - Lew & I are sitting back, preparing to be highly entertained by the oncoming angst! :D

my hope is to avoid the watching in the car stuff but I suppose we'll see. Only broken out youtube on my phone a handful of times. He loves watching outside so I'd hope everything out the window would be fun to him. We never had that stuff in the car either.

I've never been very interested in what's out the window. Staring out the window just isn't my thing.

We used to look for license plates from different states and come up with all sorts of nerdy things to do.
Of course we were also free to roam about the old station wagon and play while kids today are strapped in tightly. You probably have to stop and let them stretch their legs every couple of hours.

That's a lot o' driving. Got me thinking, have I even left the cities this year driving? Rhode as a passenger to Crex Meadows Wildlife Refuge in Wisconsin with friends this spring. Mexico, but that was flying so no countie. Not good. Could probably just Uber everywhere I have been this year on my own since nothing else was more than 20 miles and most more like 3 to 5 miles.

Have biked 600 miles though.

More miles on the bike than the Boxster.

Braggert;). Congrats though I'll be hard pressed to have a couple of hundred in but it's all on the fat bike so more exercise per mile:rolleyes:.

I made my tried-and-true chocolate chip cookies yesterday but used Irish butter instead of regular butter. The cookies spread a lot more that usual and the texture wasn’t as good. I didn’t expect the spendy butter to make worse cookies :(

Too much butterfat would be my guess. It is really awesome though on warm bread .

I would currently be eligible for this run, much to the chagrin of my girlfriend.

Welcome back, I thought maybe your stalker from Sioux City bumped you off. Couple of more weeks of work before back to school?
