At my company you can carry over 2x your yearly accrual. So if you get 3 weeks vacation, you can carry over 6 weeks.

Of course we are still on the "vacation" method. I know a lot of companies have gone to Paid Time Off (PTO) where sick leave and vacation are combined, and generally PTO can't be carried over.
 
Do most people's time off not carry over?

Mine can just keep building and building.

I think come August, I'll have like 24 days or so.


the year I started they switched from allowing you to carry over to use or lose. I think they made the change decently late in the year so people that had built up a lot of time lost it.

Just depends on the company. DH can carry a few days over but he gets less actual vacation than I do. But he also gets every other Friday if he does longer days.

I can carry over up to 190 hours of PTO, can also buy up to 40 hours a year. It would get paid out if I were to quit. This is the first job I've had where it carried over, so I'm reallllllly bad at saving it.
 
That's a good question that I don't know the answer to.

I get 10 days a year starting on my anniversary date (Aug 1) that can carry over and then 3 "personal" days that don't carry over starting Jan 1 each year.

Every place could be different, but I'd guess if you can carry over, they wouldn't.

That was a godsend at my last company. I specifically planned my notice to end a few weeks after my time rolled over, so I got paid an extra three weeks from my vacation time.

Also, as a note to all of you who get vacation time paid out if you leave, ALWAYS use personal days and floating holidays first. Most companies won't pay those out. Only vacation time.
 
I've never worked a job where it carries over. It's always use it or lose it. Do you get it paid out to you if you leave?
Damn, that would suck, I like having a nice stockpile of vacation just in case. Every spring they cap vacation at 30 days so you have to make sure you're under that at the cutoff day, I think I have like 28 days right now. We get any vacation paid out when we leave, not sick time though.

My doesn't. I was pretty frustrated last year since I lost about a week's worth of PTO.

Holy cow. You can take a really long vacation to Hawaii with that kind of PTO.

Longevity has brought me to the point where I get 18 hrs each month (2 days + 2 hours). Max accrual is 2 years. If you have the max amount on the books they stop crediting you until you use some, so in effect, it's use it or lose it. It's why I take snow days in the winter, and usually take the week between Christmas & New Years off, plus the first two days of March Madness in addition to any vacation we may take. Problem is, my 2+ days a month adds up to 27 days (or 5.4 weeks) per year, and PapaLew only gets 2 weeks...maybe 3 now, I can't remember. He started back at the bottom on PTO accruals after a layoff and job change five years ago (pretty scary at our age...).

It used to be no limit, but with a large company, that has to be carried as a liability on the balance sheet, so it went thru a few year ramp down where it was like 3X your yearly allotment, to 2X, to 2 weeks. We also accrue monthly, and if you're over 2X, you don't accrue more that month.

I guess I don't understand the PTO for salaried people, for us, sick/dr/not vacation is kind of on the honor system...like these Friday nights where I'm taking a couple hours off for little 00's Teeball games, I don't use anything, but since I work average of 9 hours a day anyway, my time sheet looks like 9, 9.5, 8.5, 9, 7.0 for the week (I only do a timesheet now because I'm direct charge/salary...I charge my hours to whatever I'm working on, when I was a manager, I didn't even do one other than vacation). Now, I think if I was barely hitting 40 every week and THEN taking a couple hours off on top of that, my boss might say something...and also, if my job was time sensitive, it might be a bigger deal, but we run 24 hours a day, so if I come in early or stay late, it's not such a big deal if I miss a few hours, *as long as I ensure coverage when I'm gone, but my co workers are good about that, since we're all in the same boat.

My old company, anything under 40 hours for salaried had to be paid company time, and they don't care for that. My current company doesnt care. But for the most point, it is an honor system. I haven't actually clocked in and out for almost a decade now, so "being under 40 hours" is really hard to track unless you're taking a full week of pto or something.
 
I'm not big on public reprimands, but I just lit up a co-worker that made a racist comment.

He looked really awkward and embarrassed when I was done.

It felt pretty damn good!
