Closer is a little better with kids (within reason). A little over an hour drive works well for us...

They're close enough that we see them regularly,
but they're far enough away that they don't drop by unannounced
But they're close enough that a visit doesn't include an overnight stay by default

They're close enough that if we have something going on for more than a few hours, they're a viable option for watching them
But far enough away that this option is used rarely enough that Grams and Gramps still cherish the time, they don't feel burdened.
They're close enough to come to the important, but not that important events (First tee-ball game, pre-school graduation)
But far enough away that they're not constantly there for everything (the rest of the T-ball games)

Yeah. My MIL is over bearing so we will see how it goes down. Oh and now we are alp within 15 minutes. I prefer 8 hours.

Only one I've been to (I think?) is Backbone State Park. I'm pretty sure we used to go camping there often when I was a kid.

Well, to be fair, 7 of them are within an hour-ish drive of my current location (Maquoketa, Bellevue, Backbone, Anamosa, Solon, Mount Vernon, and Muscatine), so most of those we hit while hiking with der hund before we had kids.

Go to ledges sometime, it's cool. Let me know and I'll be your tour guide. I grew up there (Boone). Reminds me a lot of Palisades (in CR area) but better.

Speaking of such if those of you that were in RT3 for my story telling of my sister in-laws upcoming hipster wedding. Her fiancé is a big fitness guy and normally only eats or drinks protein shakes. So today I made fun of him for not eating burgers or brats that we had. Apparently I struck a nerve with that.

**** him if he can't take a joke

Here in Texas, they're called Carl's Jr. There must be a reason behind it, but I'm too lazy to look it up.

Are Carl's Jr. and Hardee's the same?

Judging from their websites, Carl's Jr. and Hardee's certainly look the same. A quick overview: They're both owned by CKE Restaurants, named after the founder of Carl's Jr., Carl N. Karcher, who opened the first Carl's Jr. in the 1950s in California. Wilber Hardee opened the first Hardee's in 1960 in Greenville, North Carolina; over 3,000 locations later, the chain was acquired by CKE in 1997. Both chains dominate different parts of the US.
