We are trying to decide if we should go down to my wife's cousins grad party in Pella on Saturday. None of her family is going but all of the aunt's, uncle's and other cousin's will go. This feels like a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation.

If it's at Pizza Ranch, you should go.

Wow, that looks like a fox face.

A lot of corgis typically look like that. The other one we had that the ex took (just found out she had to be put down today, sad day....the dog, not the ex) looked VERY much like a fox in the face.

Riley has his overbite, so it gives him more of a dummie look (in an adorable way).

Here's my process engineer type person public service announcement for today...

If you are defining a process...create it such that there is no possibility of a human being making a mistake, or if there is a mistake made, there is a way that the systems itself catches that mistake before it causes problems.

If your system of checks and balances is to have people really, really try hard to not make mistakes and to have other people look out for the mistakes:

We create exception reports and restrictions for everything here and still have the ocassional error. As long as there is ANY degree of human intervention, people will find a way to **** it up in unforeseen ways.

it's illegal to have alcohol at a party?

At grad parties I believe so. Back when I was in high school (2004-2008) there was a big movement to not have alcohol at grad parties. Minors would get it, consume and drive. So now from what I am told even if no minors are consuming it they may sneak it and it is viewed as serving to minors and the parents can be charged with that.

I always love my peers (usually educated at a not-to-be-mentioned nearby university associated with the state of Iowa) that always throw out the "well, what do you expect us to make it idiot proof?" Uhh, yeah, actually, I do, or as ****ing clsoe to it as humanly possible.

You should just respond: "making it Hawkeye-proof would be a start, at least."

So now that 55 broke my heart and bailed on our romantic holiday weekend, I'm open to more suggestions for things to do! So far I have:

-read a book on the beach
-make a sandcastle
-make a sand sculpture of myself making a sand castle
-visit Schofield Barracks (or maybe Pearl Harbor since it would be easier to do.

Speaking of Pearl Harbor, I have an uncle who was stationed there when they attacked. I have his first - hand account of the events of the day and his thoughts on the war. Very interesting read. My aunt (his wife) is still living.

So apparently Fiji is out...

Exactly. They always find a way to unknowingly bypass anything you can throw at them.

Yeah, I just usually skip the processes management puts in place because process are for the "dumb" ones. Kind of how I roll.

Previous job, we brought on some new software. As we started to use it, we could tell the vendors QA testing was quite lacking. Since this software was being used to register patients at our clinic sites, we asked the vendor what the best steps were to take if one patient got mixed with another. Their answer? "Oh, that won't happen..."

Poppycock.

Humans are involved in this...it WILL happen. So, we just trial & errored our way through a procedure, and documented it the best we could.
