Interesting. Both times I have been to Maui the rental places I used prohibited travel on the southern route to Hana but the northern route from Kahului through Wailua had no such restriction.
I only rent with enterprise and national, since we have corporate accounts through them, and they've given me maps that strictly prohibit it. Maybe other rental places allow it?
So with Enterprise and National you cannot by contract take their cars to Hana by any route? That is dumb. It is a route with a lot of curves and quite a few one lane bridges but there is nothing dangerous about it. The southern end is largely unpaved so I can understand that.
This is a map that many car rental companies were using for Maui. Note that the restrictions are on the bottom of the map in red. You should have no problem finding one that allows you to take the northern route(Hana Highway) to Hana and clear to the Ohe'o Gulch.
