Last night was interesting. I leave work. I have a free ticket to the game emanating awesome from my pocket.

I was about 20 miles from Lawrence when my wife calls. Something fell off a pickup in front of her, she ran over it and blew a tire. She hadn't gotten a chance to pick up our daughter from day-care yet. I did a perfect 180 almost exactly like Steve McQueen in Bullitt (except with a Nissan Rogue, no actual 180, and no soundtrack) and picked up my daughter. Then I went to where my wife was broken down to change the flat.

I change the tire Dukes of Hazard style, give or take 10 minutes. I follow my wife to a shop to get the tire re-mounted. It's now 7:15. I figure I have time to still make it to most of the game. My wife tells me to get going. I give her a hug. Then I bend down to give my daughter a hug before I leave,

She goes, "My tummy hurts" and then proceeds to throw up on my pants.

I take it as a pretty obvious sign that I am not destined to go to the game. I take my daughter home while my wife finishes waiting at the shop. I give her a bath, grab some food and take care of a sick kid until she finally goes to bed (9:15-ish).

The wife and I shower, get into bed and turn the tv on. I go into our DVR and there's no game recorded. We each thought the other had set up the recording.

So all told, I had a free ticket to see the game in person, yet I ended up only watching the last 4 minutes of the game. Plus I got a sick kid and had to pay for a tire to get fixed.

And the worst thing? KU wasn't destroyed.

wow, that was quite the evening

I got home from work at 5:15, worked out for 45 minutes ( with many long breaks in between sets!) ate tacos, then played clash of clans from 7:30-8:00, then watched the game.

This is why I'm terrified of having a kid now. My life is awesome.

they say it's more awesome with kids. But I agree, I like my free time.

If you want pain, look up the man maker exercise. Though now that I'm looking online, our lady last night added an extra push up :skeptical:

We did seven of those, then 100 jump ropes........and repeated five times. If my arms had any strength left, they'd be packing of bags of dog poo to send to trainer lady's house.

The thumbs up is a "sympathy" thumbs up, not a "glad this happened" thumbs up.

Sorry you had a poopy evening...even moreso than the rest of us Cyclones...

Once you come to terms that a perfectly planned event is going to get completely blown up on occasion, there isn't anything better than being a dad.

Oh, and next time you have tacos, make an extra one and throw it on the floor. That's preparation for taco night with future children.

Before I went to sleep, I went into the basement and checked the water heater to make sure it wasn't leaking. I felt like I was in a bad 80's movie. I was laughing about it all as I was lying in bed. Pretty sure Mrs. Cooler thought I'd finally lost it.

Cause normally it's Mrs. Cooler who laughs while you guys are laying in bed?

:pwink:

Cooler, sorry about the evening. It was a free ticket, right? The cost of the tire was probably more than a ticket though. Have had many days like those.

So my parents missed their connection to their overnight flight to Peru thanks to a 2hr delay due to mechanical issues. Cruise ship disembarks today from Lima at 7pm local time. Their flight leaves Miami at 4:50pm. They will have to take a bus 2hrs to catch the ship at the next port tomorrow. Hopefully once they get on the ship it will be "smooth sailing". Sounds like there are about 20 of them on the cruise that missed the flight.

I hope this doesn't sour them on the idea of cruising. We've found it to be a very enjoyable way to travel. We have found a difference in services, amenities, and available shore excursions between different cruise lines, and some cruises have been better than others. :)

When the ice on the western edge of the roof three stories above me melts just enough to drop onto the skylights directly over where I am sitting in my office, it's enough to scare the living crap outta ya, lemme tellya!

They cruise a lot--they've done a couple different European river cruises, did a cruise that was in Norway for the summer solstice, have cruised islands like Fiji and Bora Bora, have done an Alaska cruise, and now are cruising along the coast of South America. They travel at least 2-4 times a year and usually haven't had too many issues with air/transportation. Not much you can do about mechanical issues, but flying out of DSM and having to connect flights (their issue happened in Dallas) isn't as nice as flying out of MPLS and getting direct flights. They are only 1/2hr further to MPLS than DSM but the flights were included in this Alumni Association package--you were limited as to what you could use.

Honest question. Are the trips through the Alumni Association pretty much loaded with old people? They have some pretty cool looking destinations, but the thought of going on a vacation with 80 sets of my parents scares the bejeesus outta me.

We did a river cruise from Amsterdam to Vienna on the Rhine, the Main & the Danube (maybe one that your parents did, Birdy?) that PapaLew and I referred to as the "geriatric cruise". We had just turned fifty. Most of the passengers were 75-90 years old. We actually had a ball! We're pretty extroverted, so we had no trouble starting up conversations. It was a small passenger complement (only 120) so we really got to know each other pretty well. It might not be for everyone, but it worked for us. :)

Is there a link to the Alumni tours?

I will be able to tell you in a month when they get back. :) This is the first time they have done one through them, usually they make their own trips through their travel agent. I suppose some of it would depend on timing--not sure how many "younger" people can take off work for a month in Feb. Summer trips might have younger people (under the age of 70)? Not sure. Plus given their extensive travel experience (one of their longer trips was 6 weeks in New Zealand/Australia) they even felt the prices were pretty steep.
