The answer is yes. For example, what did you have for distractions 10-15 years ago? You had the television but it was usually watched as a family. With the lack of activities, you had more of an incentive to go outdoors and socialize with each other.
Nowadays, you have facebook, twitter, instagram, message boards, reddit, etc.. This has replaced the old ways of communication. Social media has made socializing safer. You spend more time talking to friends or anonymous people on social media than anywhere else. This leads to taking your family members for granted. How many more events are organized by facebook now than ever? We used to use letter or had to call by the phone back in the day, which is more social then now where it's texting or via the internet.
For part 2, yes, people my age do it also. You look one way and you'll see someone on a social media site. How silly would a "selfie" look 10, even 5 years ago? The world is becoming more technology based. Soon, this will be going on more frequently in other countries. The older you get, the less efficient people are at understanding how all of the social media sites work. The family members, your dad and mom, would be classified in this category and might be less proficient at understanding the mechanics of a computer. They wouldn't bother with social media much besides to keep an eye out on you.
You then put a real life example. For me, my dad was trying to get on CF via his iPhone, he didn't know how to use an app. So I had to guide him through these simple steps to visit the site via Chrome app to help him visit the site.
That should get you started, edit the content so it flows better.
