The vixen and her sister cleaned out the MIL's freezer not too long after the FIL died. There were some packages of meat in there from 2011. She's a food hoarder, for sure.....also had three frozen cherry pies in there. Three pies for one woman?
As a test, after my wife and I cleaned out the In-laws freezers (yes plural), I took one picnic ham and left it in the bottom of a chest freezer. I checked a few months ago when we had to get stuff for her mom when she moved into her apartment and it was still there. Guessing about 15 years old.

The wife's brother's youngest won't eat anything but maybe 2-3 things. So when the family gets together, the wife's brother brings in an air freezer and makes him chicken nuggets (my kids will just go hungry if they won't eat whats there). So I found the most freezer burnt chicken nuggets that I had ever seen, shook some of the ice out of the package and put them prominently in a spot where they would get grabbed. About 5 minutes later the kid came out and grabbed them. I was laughing to myself for about five minutes. They had to be like eating hockey pucks.

Are you in Iowa?

The culture around my dad anyway is exactly this kind of scenario. Folks protecting themselves kind of but no thoughts of others if they get it.

These same people will complain if things like concerts etc. are still limited or not even happening this summer as they were ok with spreading it.

*This is not to say it doesn't happen everywhere...just seems very common around there.
The most common thing I've seen recently is people getting the vaccine and not wearing a mask anymore. If asked they say, "I got the vaccine so I'm fine". The masks aren't for you they are for others basically. Less and less masks as the more vaccines get administered.

When we were moving my stepdad's parents out of their house years ago so that my folks could take care of them we found food everywhere. There were closets full, under every bed was packed with canned and packaged food. It was amazing. They had lived through the depression and I think they were afraid of ever being hungry again.
I was on an ambulance call one time, walked into this older person's house and they had cases of green beans and canned salmon stacked chest high in the bedroom. That call always haunts me a little, a local guy showed up (believe the person who found him called him since he was kind of this guys friend but we didn't trust his motives) while we were working on him and trying to figure some basic things out. He is in the kitchen for a bit and then enters with a piece of paper and a bottle. He seems an odd level of concerned, and tells us he found a suicide not beside a 50 year old monster bottle of narcotics. The guy survived but wasn't the same, the concerned friend was believed to be the single old persons benny in his will.

Yeah...I don't get the whole catering to only eating one or two things. I didn't serve lima beans & black eyed peas (which I love) to my family because I was the only one who loved them. And I only rarely made meatloaf because it was the one food that would make my older son cry (he still doesn't eat meatloaf...any version...). But that was just a few items that I could easily work around.
A few years back one of our daughters kept telling us that her daughter won't eat this, won't eat that...in front of the kid. And would give in to her and feed her only those two things, despite whatever food is on the table. So she was eating McD's chicken McNuggets while the rest of us were eating my home-fried chicken. Later on, when mom was distracted, she came to me & said she was hungry, and I told her I was just about to eat a drumstick for a snack, and offered her one. Man, she took one tentative bite then snarfed it down like a wolf. She eats what grandma & PapaLew cook now. Part of me wonders if her "pickiness" stemmed from her parents' habits. McNuggets are easier than cooking a full meal.

Had to call the last person I still call and talk to in Iowa, other than my sister, yesterday. I had just read the letters to the editors in the alumni Visions magazine. Letters commenting on Visions daring to talk about racism in the last issue. Called Jeff Johnson a racist so you can guess the tone of the letters. Whole letter section was a anti-BLM rant and a denal that racism even exists. Woof. At first I was surprised they printed them but than realized it was more of an exposé of alumni racism than anything printed in the previous issue which set off the old fools. BTW, previous issue was pretty innocuous but it used the term blm in the non organization context and that was enough to blow things up. I might be done with donating to ISU if that's what our alumni are like. :( There is essentially no hope for Iowa, or maybe even the country.

There is always 1-2% on each extreme side and are the most vocal that put a bad image on the other 96-98%.

For Christmas or thanksgiving (It has been a couple years now), one of them, before we went to the in-laws, I would tell the kids to grab a quick peanut butter or ham sandwich. In-laws would break out the lutefisk, and that is the one thing that I just won't eat. To compound this, my MIL may be one of the worst cooks that has ever been in a kitchen. The roasts and hams are cooked for what seems to be days on end. Nearly every dish is loaded down with dairy (I'm lactose intolerant but don't have people change anything for me) or has 0 seasoning and is completely bland or mush. Normally I and the kids will just eat whatever she has but I refuse to eat lutefisk so me and the kids will sneak a snack before going there so we can just eat the salads that are there and some garnishes.

We figure to still be wearing masks post-vaccination...for how long, I'm not sure. Until WE feel comfortable not wearing them anymore, I guess.

Lew mentioned us getting back to the new normal on FB after we got our first dose. Last night his oldest boy (a high school science teacher in the Seattle area, and a full-on Trumper) latched on to his wording and started lecturing Lew about how masks are okay for some things but he doesn't think they should be worn all the time, by everyone. Also, FAKE NEWS. I stayed out of it, because I would have smacked him upside the head with some truths, especially when he told Lew that the "body condom" we made so Lew could hug his elderly mom was basically useless "because it wasn't "aseptic technique". Well no **** Sherlock! Of course it's not sterile, you putz. But it's one more barrier to help protect an elderly woman hooked to an oxygen tank. Then he started with the "lifestyle shaming". Quote: "Don't believe everything on the news. They're all biased and have their agendas. Some of them exaggerated the deaths and some of them underplayed the deaths. Let's not forget that there are other deadly diseases in this world. In the US, heart disease will claim over 700,000 lives this year and cancer will claim almost another 600,000 lives. By the way, many of these deaths can be prevented through lifestyle changes."

I wanted to reply to that crap with: Well lemme tellya, bubba...Lew and I have undergone a DRASTIC lifestyle change for nearly a year now, and it has been extended because of self-righteous ******** like you.

I refrained out of respect for my husband, but I really needed to vent here. This son is a condescending ******* who looks down on Lew and I because we don't have college degrees. He pisses me off, royally (in case you missed that fact). :)

That's why my sisters & I would take over the cooking chores when we visited our dad & step-mom. Of course, we did it "for her, so she could relax and not get worn out feeding so many folks", but really it was for US. That woman could manage to have undercooked and burnt food at the same meal, every meal. I think the only thing she ever made that was decent was a bowl of cereal. :D

Always found it best to ignore those things. I don't always, but try to. Most times, the "everything involves politics" people are looking for an argument and they won't listen to you no matter how much logic, reason, facts or anything you present. College degrees aren't everything, they are helpful opening doors, but just like the internship thread is now going, who you know and then what you can do is more important by late 20s than the degree you have.

Lew was far calmer than I was.
We need to agree to disagree with each other because neither of us will budge. My opinion is just that. My opinion. I go to bed at night knowing I have done everything within my power to keep my friends and family safe.

This is one of those posts that makes me wish you could put more than one reaction. I debated between the friendly, agree, like or winner because I've had these same types of conversations with my wife (about others as we are both of the same mindset as you and Lew). I settled with the generic "like" as it seems to cover all the bases the best.

This reminds me of one Thanksgiving, the last one my parents let my grandma cook for. We showed up around 8:00 am to help her cook, and she informed us that we don't have to worry about the turkey, because she got up early and put it in the oven...at 4:00. We typically eat those holiday meals at 1:00, so that turkey was more than a bit on the dry side. It wasn't quite like the Griswold Christmas turkey, but we did go through more gravy than usual.

Anyone who would serve lutefisk to company (without first asking) IMO does not belong in polite company.

Or anyone's company, for that matter.

Lutefisk is generally considered a toxic substance among those who know.

I usually have to get up early for our Thanksgiving meal, but that's because it's usually a stuffed, 25 lb bird, and the kids like to be at the table by 1.00 which means the bird has to be out of the oven by 12, 12.30 at the latest. I only have one oven, so while the bird is getting carved, the crescent rolls, greenbean casserole & marshmallow topped yams are baking.
I've already told Lew that our next stove (this one is about 15 years old) will have a double oven. Period. End of discussion. :D

I won't comment on the rest of this because - you know - cavish, but when I get to this part I just need to say the smarty-pants needs to remember who set him up early in life so he could get that college degree.

I made our company's HR officer aware. He's probably sick and tired of hearing complaints about this guy, though. Long story...........

Well if the matriarch gets the Covid that guy won't be very popular, doesn't she still come in?

Velo - what part did you dislike? :D
I really don't like it when people totally cater to kids' developing palates - palates that won't develop when you refuse to nudge kids to continue to try new things and to occasionally eat things that aren't their favorite. You are really condemning them to a lifetime of bland and unexciting. And the worst part is they will never understand what they are missing.

So I didn't dislike what you wrote but rather what they are doing to that kid. If I had quit when I was a kid (even though I was anything but picky), I would today not eat things like maple syrup and cottage cheese. But because I was encouraged to keep trying I learned to like and eventually love these foods and so many others.
