Raising Canes Sucks

Once as a waiter at Outback in 90s a woman told me her soup was cold (after finishing it) and she had eaten the little bowl of ranch that came out with someone's cheese fries as if if was soup. Dead serious. At the time the cheese fries did come with a little ceramic bowl that did look kind of like a small soup bowl, where the other sauces would come in the cups that were obviously dipping sauces.
I like ranch with my fries. I've been told that's an Iowa thing. I'm not going to make excuses for people with disgusting eating habits though. I do think that most restaurants try and make a menu that's aimed at indulging rather than being balanced and healthy. There's a restaurant called First Watch that makes healthy breakfast. I miss that place living in Iowa again.

100% agree with this. Every now and then one of their butter burgers just hit the spot, but their fries are mediocre at best and associating their cheese curds with Wisconsin should be considered a war crime. They're awful.

Growing up in WI I know a lot of people who have always treated Culvers like it's elite and I have never understood the love. I honestly prefer the food from the hot bar at a Kwik Trip/Star.
I really wonder if the people that love Culvers have ever had real wisconsin style cheese curds. Or have went to the dive bar in the middle of nowhere Wisconsin and had some really great food, and awesome curds.

Or bought real battered curds at a creamery or fresh curds too. Ellsworth Wisconsin Creamery is awesome. Clyde's Corner in Beldenville or any number of random local bars, for some really great food.

Sure we are talking fast food here, but man Culvers really misses the mark with trying to imitate that kind of food.

I have done some of those things in Wisconsin. Culver's cheese curds are ok. Not great. Not bad. Prairie du Chien (sp) has some good spots for those who visit NE Iowa but haven't ventured over the river.

I prefer blue cheese, but will use ranch if that's all there is. There are times when ranch dressing is the right condiment, just not all the time like my wife does.

The best use for ranch, other than wings, is to mix it 50/50 with hot sauce for fried fish.

They do. Most batters start with flour, salt, and pepper, then go to whatever herbs and spices that makes it theirs. Maybe the level of S&P you prefer isn't high enough, but I can surely taste it. They also marinate their chicken, not sure what's in it though.

KFC is disgusting pure salt. Cane’s has less seasoning than any chicken I’ve had in my life pretty easily including making at home. Seasoning isn’t just salt.

I sometimes make a "tartar" sauce for fish that is just Miracle Whip and Western Dressing mixed together. Its good on fried fish, esp if its not good fried fish. You could doctor it up more if you wanted, but it works just 50/50ish of those 2 ingredients..

Dublin Bay in Ames, has the best buffalo sauce. I believe it has bourbon in it. You can actually buy it there if you ask. I've tried to duplicate it at home as there are a lot of recipies you can find on the internet. Was there Saturday night and had the buffalo tenders. It was that or the buffalo chicken sandwich. The tenders are legit also!

PDC has an amazing hamburger stand.

Is Western Dressing French Dressing? I don't like either so I've always wondered.

God, that feels like what we used to always have with fish sticks growing up. Don't know where that idea originated. At some point I started making mine with just Miracle Whip and pickle relish (sweet or dill just depends on what we currently have). Occasionally throw in lemon juice or lemon pepper if we have it in the house. Also hit it with some siracha or other hot sauce if I want something spicier.

Yes and no, I believe it is basically french, but I think it has a little different spices or something. Its supposed to be a bit more zesty I think. Whatever you take that for.

It is for the most part just french. But mixed with Miracle whip it does make an ok dipping sauce/tartar sauce for fish or fries etc.

I remember the big bottle of Western Dressing with that stupid longhorn on it. Always had one in the house. Ended up on the taco salads if I recall. Still see taco salads at potlucks with it mixed in.

yeah if you have relish or others you can doctor it however you want.

I agree it was from when I was a kid, we never had tartar sauce but we always had western and miracle whip so we made that. I have used straight miracle whip but the western and other stuff makes it a bit better.

But fresh fish out of the lake we never put anything on just flour, salt and pepper and fry, maybe a little salt after frying. But frozen fish or for sure store bought fish always needed sauce or doctoring.

BBops fries are great, I mean, for standard fries none seasoned. I think they stand up to any.

But seasoned fries or curly seasoned fries they are not going to compare to.

But I think some on here are trying to compare apples to oranges. You cant compare spicy to non spicy and you cant compare seasoned to non seasoned etc.

I also think some on here must have grew up eating caviar from silver spoons. Or are extremely picky. I mean you dont go to Burger King for gourmet food, you go there for a decent burger, fast and cheap. (at least when compared to a sit down restaurant).

Its not really fair trying to compare RC, Popeyes, Zaxbys etc to Applebees, Hickory Park, or Le Bernardin.

If you want to compare RC chicken strips to another fast food non spicy strips, its one thing.

Then again when I was a kid we would go to McDs as a treat maybe a couple times a year. We would pack our own lunches when we went places like a zoo or amusement park and go out and eat in the parking lot. Sometimes even packing our own lunch on shopping trips. We might get to share a Bottle (glass) of pop on a Saturday evening every so often. Take out pizza was maybe once in a month treat. My mom made our own birthday cakes. And so on. We ate boiled potatoes, burgers (many times with regular bread for bun) or roast, and some corn, a lot. And we cleaned our plates or didnt leave the table. So I guess I look at things a bit differently than some.
We all had the same upbringing or at least we're all gonna remember it the same way. You didn't grow up special

Complaining about Fast Food is an American past time. We all know what we're eating when we go out. It's not that special and we're comparing D tier food to F tier food.

I didnt say that no one had the same, I said SOME didnt. I am sure the ones that grew up in the last 20 years in West DM had a very different upbringing that I described. But those of us on here that grew up in the 70s and 80s in Rural Iowa I am sure most had the same or very similar.

But again I said some appear to have had different experiences growing up, not everyone. So of course some on here had the same experience.
