Besides, with the transfer portal taking on huge importance now and knowing everyone is watching who they follow via Twitter bots, wouldn't the smart thing to do be to simply mute someone rather than unfollowing?

Yeah, if someone is a firm commit and doesn't sign on the early signing day, it is probably best to start digging for someone else in that position. If you are truly firmly committed, there is really no reason to wait from December to February
