Purdy's Early Performance

Man, chill out.

Holy ****, the kid just helped lead us to a win for the first time in 50 years against a fired up OU at home. He is 2-0 in the conference so far. GTFO with this ********. He will get better against some of the ****** defenses in this conference. FFS TCU has a good defense and we technically beat them by 2 scores. OU is full of 4-5 star talent and was motivated last week. That usually spells a beat down for us. JFC appreciate what we currently have and STFU

Lol, wow. It's not like they chose to berate or belittle Brock here bud. They are pointing out what PFF said and is having an open discussion about it. It's like you tried to read between the lines and failed hard. Sit back, breathe and take a chill pill. Overreaction much?

Sincere question. Does a play that results in Defensive pass interference count an an incompletion?
If so, there were probably 4 or 5 of them against OU.
It doesn't count as an attempt either and the QB doesn't get the resulting (penalty) yardage. I'm sure Brock couldn't care any less. He is doing what it takes to get the win even if it means that it appears that he did less than he really did to contribute to it.

I brought the article to our board to discuss because I saw it elsewhere, it's clear people like you are not very good at handling outside/differing opinions. Nobody in this whole thread said he wasn't going to improve this season, calm down.
You brought it to discuss, that’s fine.

You then proceeded to say that the numbers can only indicate regression. While blaming the coaching staff. That’s inane, if you prefer a different word than “dumb”. Or would you prefer specious?

And now you pretend that you did no such thing. I’m digging my way through my vocabulary now.

With all the weirdness of this season that is a result of Covid, I feel like ULL game has to be looked at as an anomaly. With no spring ball and a shortened fall ball, there was less time to develop chemistry between Brock and the receiving core. This mostly effects Hutchinson as the new guy, but also hurt the development of the underclassmen (Shaw, Scates, etc.) which led to timing issues and drops. Additionally, the team was missing the top returning pass catcher from last year with Kolar out. If you also consider how Campbell always calls games conservatively early in the season, I think it is reasonable to look at Louisiana as the exception, not the rule for Purdy and the offense.

While he hasn't been the best passer in the Big 12 so far, I still believe Purdy is the best signal caller. I heard on podcast this week that his ability to extend plays is Big Ben-esque, which I think is a good comparison in that he isn't a top flight runner, but the way he senses pressure and escapes the pocket is going to keep the offense in good situations most of the time.

My biggest complaint is that Brock has not cleaned up some of the mechanical issues that cause his accuracy problems that pop up occasionally. His decision-making is still suspect at times as well. Hopefully at some point he will start stepping into his throws.

I will actually disagree with you there. How many times have we seen Brock throw off his back foot like he was last year? Brock looks much more confident in the pocket and is stepping into his throws even when there is pressure. IMO that is a huge step for him and a significant correction in his mechanics.

While everything in this paragraph rings true, it stinks because we will possibly be looking at that game at the end of the season wondering, man what could have been.

It’s not an overreaction at all, certain people have been bashing the kid all year in game threads etc and it’s getting old.

This is why pre-season hype is a dangerous thing. And Purdy was hyped by many--both ISU fans and others.

If a QB regresses over the years, I blame the coaching staff. Tape gives the other teams tendencies and bad habits to key off of. If the staff doesn't identify them and coach them out of the player his numbers will go down. That is my hot take and I'm sticking to it.

Oh no, not the dumb rating! God forbid someone bring up a topic in hopes of legitimate discussion on this board.
I think Marty's (a.k.a. Cactus's) original point was, with only a three game sample, there shouldn't be just "improved" or "regressed" options. No reputable statistician would view things so black and white.

Hey guys, haven’t been on this thread. How’s it...........

Another statistical way to view Purdy's performance this year is through QBR. I know many would argue that QBR is a better indication of how well a QB is playing. It is viewed as more complete. This is what his averages have been:

Avg QBR 2018: 76.7
Avg QBR 2019: 71.2

2020:
QBR vs Louisiana: 24.7
QBR vs TCU: 76.8
QBR vs Oklahoma: 79.0

Obviously the Louisiana game was horrific, but the other two games he has been about where he has been in the past. This is a pretty small sample size and we will definitely know more after a few weeks, I just think Iowa State has been leaning more heavily on the run game.

Based on QBR the best game of his career was against TCU last year at 94.4 and the worst...... Louisiana.

-How many passes were dropped in that Louisiana game? 7-8? That will effect the rating and the game results.

Also, Iowa State is making a conscious effort to not have Brock free-wheel as much outside of the pocket as he did as a Freshman because the back-up situation is so unknown.
This! Was very true last year too, especially against UNI. Not saying it is a bad thing, but they do bridle the horse from time to time. Personally, I love it when he is let loose to do his thing, but if got injured on one of those plays - we would be ***** doggie dog as a fan base! At the end of the day, I just want Ws, and 2-0 is really sweet right now. Let's Go State!

Dropped passes statistically can go both ways. 5 interceptions were dropped by Oklahoma. Purdy is pushing his luck. There are open outlet receivers but he seems to lock onto his primary receiver whether they are open or not. Some blame could go to OL for making him rush throws, and WR for route/speed issues. If we have 3 TE, why can’t we use them for bubble screens? Seems like that play would be unstoppable . Still haven’t seen a jet sweep called either or a wildcat. At least we have figured out a short yardage formation this year.
