PSU Campbell Presser

On the Pinstripe Bowl broadcast, they just said that Campbell was supposed to join them, but his flight was cancelled because of the snow. JFR made it to Ames despite a bad snowstorm!

Quick check of my national radar only shows some light snow in Jersey right now. Its only significant precipitation showing up in the entire NE right now.

Interesting how people keep talking about how "close" Campbell is to family. On the Pinstripe Bowl broadcast, they just said 2-1/2 hours. "The reality of it is" that it is more like 4 hours.

It will be an interesting case study. Campbell made ISU very competitive consistently even when it became obvious that schools with the biggest budgets were going to have huge advantages. Will players that are ranked higher be as hungry as what Campbell worked with in Ames?

Campbell also famously hates the other stuff that comes with coaching (kissing up to boosters, stuff like that). He didn't have to do much of that here; I'm guessing that won't be the case at Penn State.

Campbell will get his players to buy-in that’s what he is especially good at. He isn’t an elite in-game coach that’s for sure.

What will be interesting is seeing how important Heacock was to Matt’s success. Defense carried us to more victories than Offense during his tenure.

This is the most laughable part of all of this. People need to brush up on their geography.

I’m sure Matt will just hop on the car and drive 4 hours to DC to see his daughter at school.

Kids going to Penn State are largely chasing a bag. There will be plenty of hungry kids there that are coachable, but he’ll have more problems than he did here.

That and the media out there is absolutely ruthless. If he is pissy with someone like Bruns just wait until he loses a couple of games out there.

Bruns is a FB alum who loves ISU while still providing fairly even-handed analysis.

If he really got offended at something Bruns said…I’m sure he’ll handle the Pitt & Philly media well o_O

Campbell's interaction with the traditional press will be very intersting to watch. It has to be one of the worst parts of the Penn State job.

I wonder how State College will react when Campbell is driving for a Big 10 championship, refuses to use his last time out when his OC can't call a play on time, and then watches as his QB panics with 1 second left and throws a pick?
Oofta, I had not thought about that play in a long time and now, it might be back in my nightmares for the next few weeks.

I actually think a few plays before that was worse. Purdy had all sorts of green grass in front of him and forces a tough pass in to Chase Allen for an incompletion though looking back again, Chase was manned up.

Starts at around the 2:21:00 mark:

This is where my mind goes. Heacock was the driving force for a lot of the success at Iowa State, how many years was the offense lagging and frustrating? The offense always had Matt’s hand in it.

We saw a lot of coaches shuffling on the offensive side of the ball and strength and conditioning program. It’s seems like he finally found an OL coach, but I still question the strength and conditioning with all the injuries we saw the past 2 years.

When all that was happening Heacock was usually able to have a Top 5 defense in the conference even with terrible injuries happening.

Penn State will not accept the “dips” with bad seasons, slow starts, and head scratching losses that seemed to happen with Matt. We all saw how poorly he handled the little pressure he had at a certain points while he was here, that will be multiplied at Penn State.

When it comes to taking tough questions or criticism... Matt has never been able to handle it. You can always see it in his face... he will give the person questioning him the death stare. It's why people eventually never asked him a tough question at all.

I always will appreciate what Matt did here, and I said we needed to try to keep him if we could because I believed he was the best we could probably afford, but with that being said... I've always seen through his facade... he's a salesman... just like any other coach.

As for those who said he's told other ISU players that aren't good enough for PSU to look elsewhere because ISU will not be the same... that would NOT surprise me at all. He seems exactly like the person that not only wants to succeed at PSU, but would also love nothing more than for ISU to take a big step back without him there.

Lived in Philly for awhile and was kind of surprised at the level of interest in Penn State given how many alumni there are of schools like Temple, Penn, Villanova, Drexel, LaSalle, etc. very much like how a lot of UNI students and alumni are Hawk fans.

It wouldn’t be the first time a HC got all the credit only to find out it was the coordinators who made it happen.

Thinking about this differently, what has Campbell proven? He took over a decent Toledo program and made them better. He took over ISU when we had been on the rise but started to drop again late in the Rhoads’ tenure. Of course he gets some credit for our rise. But we had our failings during his time AND benefitted from schedule changes.

All of Campbells success at ISU was with Heacock. How many games did we barely beat a worse team because of the D? So many games like Arky St where we had no business winning but our D stood up.

I don’t think Campbell turning PSU into a dynasty is a sure thing, at all.

Agree. Second season will be his real test. Schedule in year one sets up a strong record and unrealistic expectations for year two, when the schedule ramps up considerably. I can see clashes with reporters, boosters and casual fans.
