Prohm needs coaching help

I'm typically a Prohm defender. But my one complaint with him is that he's usually slow to tinker. Should have left Conditt in at the end yesterday. I think he was going with what he felt comfortable with (starters with Lindell rotating in and out) vs. looking at the game George was having.

It wasn't the fact that we lost yesterday, it was the way we lost. Was like having a flashback to the McD years (I'm not equating the two, I think Prohm is better than Greg).

Hopefully Coach and the team get it turned around soon. But yesterday sucked.

Also I thought it was telling that Prohm was substituting guys in furiously in the first half (Talley, Conditt, Lewis). You could tell he was frustrated at how the game was going, and was reaching for any sort of spark.

I thought the worst decision was to put Jacobson in for Conditt late. The thing I will never understand is Prohm's substitutions.

Just going off memory, but I feel like conditt has just been beat (handily) down low the possession before. I know he was playing well but MJ can space the floor more on offense and is a stronger body on defense...both of which we needed in that situation. IMO

Yeah he had bad position on Wade and let Wade get to the rim for a basket (Wade's only basket).

I think many forget how many close games Fred lost. Many were saying the same things.

I didn’t go look up the stats and verify but the numbers that were being posted yesterday were not good for Prohm. Prohm was quite a bit under .500 in the close games and Fred was a little over .500. Fred is not undeserving of critique and criticism but if those numbers are accurate it says a lot IMO.

I thought he got a little too conservative at the end of yesterday's game, when we got the lead by attacking KSU's defense. Winding the clock down played right into their defensive gameplan.

Prohm being more aggressive towards the end was what won us that game against Hield's OU team in his first season. I'd like to see more of that when the situation presents itself.

During the KSU post game show yesterday, Coach Weber was complimentary on ISU. However, he also stated that ISU is not good on switches and "we were able to take advantage of that at times." I hope CSP can get this corrected, if in fact it's a problem.

That's been the most frustrating thing about the Baylor and KSU losses. If we get just one more stop, basket, etc. we probably win.

Interesting, last season we didn’t switch as much and coaches took advantage too. So, it’s always an ongoing challenge. Wish our PnR action got more mismatches but maybe they do and it all comes down to just making shots, idk.

1. The poor coaching is not just at the end of the game. I think Prohm is a good recruiter.
   1. No offensive plays other than a high screen pick and roll. We do not have any motion offense with back picks, rubs, or L cuts. If you do not have the ball or are not the post setting the high pick, there is little motion or help getting open shots. All we do is high pick and roll and pass the ball around the outside. This is most evident at the end of the game, we do not have a motion offense to run. All we have is a guard dribbling out front letting the clock run down and then set an on-ball pick and drive the lane. This worked when you had Morris. It is not working now. This was the basic offense my kids ran for me when they were in grade school.
   2. We rarely pass the ball to the post on the block. Yesterday, I do not remember one time where we passed the ball to a post on the block while the post was posting up. We had pick and rolls and rim running where we passed to the post. I am not saying our posts are great with their backs to the basket, but at least we could do some inside out plays or ball reversals through the post. Our best 3 point shooting is on inside out plays. However, yesterday, the only inside out plays we had was when the guards drove the lane and passed out. Yes, that worked. But we need more options. We hardly ever run inside out plays through the post. The bad part about this is that I do not know how Prohm will recruit further post players if you do not pass the ball to them inside. If I was a high school post player, I would not look at ISU as I wouldn't want to be used mostly for setting picks. Watch Iowa yesterday, they consistently pounded the ball inside. We did not do it once!
   3. No out of bounds plays that get a layup. We barely get the ball in bounds, let alone score.

Can’t disagree with any of this, but why did things work so well vs. KU? KU wasn’t great & Certainly a ways to go, but they’ll probably still win the darn league.

Or KSU can say: we make one of our "missed shots" and the winning margin is 3 or 4 and not 1.

That was justifiable tough to see the overturn. I didn’t get that at all.

There were some ref calls yesterday by refs that weren’t in the position to make them.

The King of Close Games was Tim Floyd. He thrived on them. Of course the flip side of his coaching tenure here was that he had a lot of blowout losses. Anyway, I don't think he's doing anything right now. Perhaps he just might possibly be interested in an assistant coaching job? I doubt it very much, but the possibility remains.

You could tell this is what prohm saw... He even opted to put Lindell at the point late in the game to drive and kick, but our guards didn't always make the best decisions on when to try and finish and when to kick it out.

Respectfully disagree. Conditt needed to be in at the end to defend the rim. We knew they would drive it to the bucket. Huge Jacobson fan, but he cannot defend the rim.
