There's really only a couple of questions to ask on athletic facility improvement:

1. Does it benefit the student athletes
2. Does it make money

The press box fails on both. Buy hot air baloons and float the press over the end zones. Sell ads. Make money

But a new one would be built with added suites....or at least I'd assume so and thus it could potentially be a money maker.

Does it matter a lot to anyone who can help us win games? No. Does it impact a potential recruits first impression? Yes absolutely. Again highest priority? No. Something that needs addressed? Absolutely.

Agreed. Good summary.

I can remember many scoffing on this forum at the idea of the south endzone needing to be enclosed too and using some of the same arguments showing up on this thread against the idea.

The SEZ is outstanding and enhances the stadium. But no, it wasn't needed. That 2k figure is due to interest generated by an improved and improving product. If, God forbid we fall back into terrible 1980's form that SEZ could become quite empty. Also, a ticket price increase among the existing seating could have matched the revenue generated by the SEZ.

The single biggest reason that the SEZ was done was for aesthetics/perception, function came second. We wanted JTS to look like a real P5 stadium. And now it does. Perception matters. Recruits do indeed want to play in big time stadiums and now we have one...third biggest in the Big12.

And no, the press box is not and should not be a priority. But to say it's totally inconsequential is wrong.
The SEZ filled a niche for many aging fans who want the football experience but don't have a desire to go to games in every sort of weather. My brother and his wife are retirement age and at some point they will be going from their upperdeck side line seats to the SEZ because she is finding sitting in very hot or very cold weather less and less tolerable. The SEZ gives fans like them an option to still be at games but not have to brave weather extremes for hours on end. Without it many aging fans would likely give up their tickets and watch from home.

Plus it also gives more fans the opportunity for a club experience. Not everyone can afford the Jack Trice Club.

Maybe the bleachers that have backs will one day be replaced with stadium seats (a loss of total capacity if that change is made) and that would add to the overall amenities of the stadium. The loss of total capacity could be made up by adding seats in the NEZ by maybe putting in upper deck seats similar to SEZ.

I'm amazed that people find stuff like this to complain about. I literally have never given a single thought to what our press box looks like. Out of curiosity-- what makes it look "funny" ?

Tried to read most of this thread...but it got repetitive real quick. So you don't like the way it looks but think recruits care but haven't asked them...okay. Get over it. The Pressbox will be done with demand for it comes and other facilities are done being upgraded. Two things will play the biggest factors. The first is keeping CMC or most seasons going forward ISU is at least 6-6. The second factor will be the new TV deals in several years and how those shake out with conference realignment.

In order for ISU to not get left out in the cold in any shakeup, ISU has to be winning and facilities not including the pressbox aid in that. Pressbox is last on the list.

No. The press box has to be the number one priority now. Don't like it? Get over it. No more money for CMC or the staff. Press box has to be top of the list.

I love the stadium upgrades that have been going on, but I still think we have a subpar press box. Maybe they should just add 2 smaller press boxes on each side. I don't know, but it looks out of place with all the new things going on in and around the stadium. And it bugs me on NCAA Football 14. Looks funny.

* The SEZ should of stayed cheaper seating-- no club area; no alcohol
* The Club section should of been located in a new expanded press box, with suites, common areas, reception space; press area--and outdoor club seating. Complete with higher-end concessions and alcohol

~ The SEZ always looks 50-65% EMPTY during games, because wimps are staying warm when it gets under 50 degrees, or staying cool in warmer games. it's bad optics

~ Our press box is so sub-par--The MAC Conference programs have nicer structures (Google them). A couple Texas High school stadiums have nicer press boxes. It's an embarrassment.

Ohio University, which attracts 17,000/game-- has a nicer press box

We aren't going to get a new press box until we need more luxury boxes. And right now, we are just about right on supply & demand for premium seating. Only when donation levels and ticket prices in the Sukup Endzone Section look like bargains (namely, when we have demand by lots more big donors) will we get the new press box as part of a new sideline luxury box section. Don't see it happening anytime soon.

There was another of these threads a few years back and I posted this picture of Stanford stadium. The proportions are not too much different than JTS. Not only do they have a small pressbox, but their fans rarely fill the place up, even though they spend a lot of time in the top 25. That's mostly because they have one of the best coaches in the business. Coaching > pressbox. As others have said, spend money on keeping good coaches first.
