He never played for Bennett, 3 seasons at FSU. Was a transfer this year to VA. Remember how defense sagged off Lipsey his freshman year? Multiply that by 10…. 1-7 all season from three and a poor free throw shooter
The one difference is Warley is 6'6", so even if teams try to sag off him, he's tall enough get in the paint to finish.

He's definitely been inconsistent. He shot close to 50% from the field his sophomore year, but his other 2 seasons he shot in the low 30%. He shot over 72.5% on his free throws last season on over 100 attempts, so that is a little above average.

The one thing TJ knows is that Warley can contribute against Big12 opponents. He's been a 25mpg player at FSU and scored around 7ppg and 2+ A/T.

He's a 6'7" "Scoring PG" on Torvik with bad shooting numbers and low offensive efficiency but good defensive numbers. If he already chose Virginia once and is strongly considering Iowa State at this time, then I can only imagine he's a guy who can play defense and wants to play defense at a high level.

https://www.barttorvik.com/playerstat.php?year=2024&p=Jalen Warley&t=Florida St.

My interpretation is he'd either be a high-level backup for senior Tamin and an experienced guard to cover the secondary PG role currently handled by a combo guard like Gilbert and sometimes Jones.

OR

Tamin is going to give the NBA a try after three years, which means Warley would likely be his one-year (or "interim" if you like) replacement before the younger guards are ready to take over the spot.

Something like this assuming Tamin and Milan are going pro after this season...

Warley
Indursaitis
Heise
Jefferson
Jackson
---
Batemon
Watson
Rock

Fish and the other incoming freshmen as end of bench development guys.

Tamin going pro after this year? Don't see it.

I'm not reporting anything about his future.

Just speculating Warley could be a hedge against that.

You're 100% losing Gilbert so you need a second guy ready to play PG (at least).

There is a >0% chance Tamin will go if he has a monster year, too.

TJ has to prepare for it either way.

You better really like him to tie up a scholarship in November. I'd rather keep it open and see who is around this offseason.
Considering Tony Bennett, Buzz Williams and Mark Few also want him for their teams after playing for Lenard Hamilton, think his game worthy is worthy of a roster spot.

I understand the reservations with his shooting but the staff knows how to work around a poor shooting guard like with Gabe or freshman Tamin neither were 6'7". TJ has a plan and I would welcome the addition.

There is the secondary benefit that getting him on campus to practice this spring allows the staff to learn his game, improve weaknesses and integrate. Also another legit P5 practice body to help the team improve.

I look at Warley more of a replacement for Gilbert. It provides depth in case Batemon and/or Toure aren't ready for 20mpg in 2025/26.

Would think TJ would feel pretty comfortable with Lipsey, Heise, Warley and Indrusaitis as a solid core of returning guards next season.

But is that really a concern any more with how popular the transfer portal is. Players want to play and coaches aren't afraid to recruit over guys that won't play.

Hate to think this way, but the coaching staff can view the spring as a test drive with Warley. If they like what they see, great. If they don't see a path for minutes next season, they nudge him along.

With Pierce leaving and Hawley needing surgery, it wouldn't hurt to find a mid-year transfer for practice as well.

Can you imagine the transfer portal if we can consistently develop guys int acceptable, n not decent shooters!

Go to Iowa State. They win. You’ll showcase your talents in the best conference. You will be a part af a great team atmosphere. They’ll develop your game. You’ll get paid (At the next level).

Warley didn't actually play at UVA (first three years were at Florida State then he transferred to UVA last offseason), but agree it's a potential good fit for us if UVA/Bennett wanted him.

Shayok didn't exactly shoot the lights out at UVA, .447/.374/.688 on 4.9 shots per game. Maybe Warley would blossom a bit with more shots. He only averaged 5.0 FGA/game at FSU. He shot well overall two years ago, 49% from the floor. Not sure what was going on last year. It looks like they told him to not shoot threes, he only attempted seven in 32 games played / 28 minutes per game.

Yeah, only 1 of 7 in over 30 games suggests that he probably only took a few end of shot clock prayers when he absolutely had to. His first two years he shot 9 of 30 (.300) and 10 of 31 (.323) at around one attempt per game. So perhaps his 1 of 7 isn't representative of his actual skill. If he came to Iowa State and the staff had him work on his shot until the start of the 2025-26 season he could most likely be proficient enough from the arc to at least make defenses be honest.

For reference Tamin shot .200 his freshman year.

I am sure Worley is working on improving his shot and the staff would want him to shoot better.

Going to UVA to play under Bennett indicates to me he accepts his skills and embraces a defensive role in his next team. Now that Bennett has retired TJ Defense would be the next best system to weaponize a 6'7" on ball defender guard. Even if he ends up not being a good shooter he can have a major role next year.
