Potential Measles Exposure

Hey I don’t like starting threads but considering Iowa is fairly religious and that over 250 universities were represented I wanted to pass along an email I just got.
***edit- sorry I’m an emergency physician which is why I was sent that. A very smart mod reminded me that I should probably include that info.

Dear Providers:

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is forwarding information from Kentucky health officials for awareness regarding a potential measles exposure during a large "spiritual revival" event held on the campus of Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky during early to mid-February. This was reportedly a spontaneous event without ticketing or registration. The event attracted attendees primarily through social media from all over the nation. Although the event was open to all, many of the attendees were families with children.

Unofficial tallies also indicated that more than 250 college and universities were represented. Please see the link below for the official press release from Kentucky.

An individual who reported attending the event on February 18, 2023 has since tested positive for measles. Measles is a highly contagious respiratory virus that is spread through the air. Early symptoms of measles are similar to other upper respiratory illnesses with symptoms including fever, cough, conjunctivitis and runny nose. With measles, a characteristic rash develops three to five days after symptoms begin. All individuals who attended the event on February 18, 2023 and are unvaccinated for measles with no previous history of a measles infection are encouraged to quarantine for 21 days

Good luck with that quarantine request.

Aren't most people vaccinated with an MMR shot as a kid?

Boyd Crowder alert!

Just watched that series over winter. Heard another season is coming out very soon. It was fairly dumb and unrealistic but I did like it. You couldn't help but to like Boyd.

Yes most are but there has been a growing subset of people that have skipped it for their kids. Two "groups" that come to mind are those that bought into "vaccines cause Down syndrome" and some very religious. Herd immunity is compromised when the percentage of unvaccinated increases or at large events that draw one or both of the subset of the population I used as examples.

There are also people who due to other medical conditions can't get certain vaccines or it isn't advisable that they get them.

I believe we all have a responsibility to protect all of these groups - even the children of anti-vaxers. It isn't their fault that their parents take that stand.

We have a problem in Minnesota and the Twin Cities particularly that a lot of immigrant groups here were never vaccinated in their countries of origin and they aren't vaccinating their kids born here either. There have been outbreaks of many different diseases otherwise controlled by vaccination in the US because of this.

@FriendlySpartan if you were vaxxed when you were little for measles are you good? I know when I got old enough I got the shingles vax. I know people who have had that and it is no fun. I had all the childhood vaccines but that was a longtime ago.
Had shingles in college about 10 years ago, albeit a fairly minor case it was annoying as hell. Would not recommend.

Who says they aren't vaccinated? Are you vaccinated for measles? I am. Why wish for death on people?

Of course I’m vaccinated for measles. I believe in science.

Obviously there’s some hyperbole in there. But make stupid choices, get stupid results.

What vaccine was it back in like 30-50s or so that it was basically, for 90-95% of you it will protect you the other 5-10% (and it may have been higher) it will either kill you or make you wish you were dead.

The vaccine you just made up?

I think that was what they were pumping into test subjects at the beginning of the book/movie Firestarter. But you got the percentages switched around. That and it gave you super powers if you survived.

No, I think it may have been the one where they took a circular device with several pins sticking out of it, poked your arm and then smeared the vaccine over it. Was thinking early polio, and may have a couple confused. Thought my mom didn't get one until later due to the high risk of it.

Smallpox left a circular scar on a ton of people around my grandparents age. My grandparents would be in their late 80s today. Grandpa had a dime size scar.

That sounds right for that one now that you mention it. It changed, at least in this area, in either the 60s or early 70s from that. I think my sister who is 5 years older than me has that but I don't. For some reason I am thinking Polio has had two vaccines and one was a little higher risk than you would like and the second one was acceptable. Think the first may have had a live agent and the second had a dead agent for vaccines. Like I said it was a long time ago, even before me.
