Post Covid Vacation

Just hoping for a flight to Iowa to see my family where I'm not putting people at risk.

Beyond that hoping to 5 hour road trip to Vegas in Sept '21 for ISU game. That would be my first "around lots of people" activity circled on the calandar and I'll be beyond frustrated if we still haven't gotten this thing under control.

Most other vacations I take are isolated backcountry adventure trips, covid closed a few of them because of day use and campsight use at the trailheads but really the wildfires closed that more in 2020. Even still there a lot of areas that are simply off limits for overnight use more because of fire than covid. People do just as bad a job following fire restrictions as they do covid restrictions and ruin it for the responsible people that can happily use outdoor spaces without a gigantic campfire.
 
Get home to visit parents/grandma sometime spring/summer
Hopefully a river trip or two in the summer
ISU vs. UNLV in Vegas Sept 18th
Maybe somewhere tropical next winter

I'm going to Disneyland!

Maybe I can combine that with Vegas for the UNLV game.
 
What’s a vacation?

The only “vacations” we’ve taken over the last number of years are where the wife and kids tag along on a work trip.
 
Wanted to visit my sister and BIL in AZ this year but that didn't happen. Also have some friends in that area so was planning on combining a trip out there.

Also have a brother who is institutionalized in Western Iowa. I'm his legal guardian. They were pretty much in lock-down mode all during post-March 2020. I always go out at least once per year to visit but felt really bad it didn't happen this year. It's just a day trip actually.

We had to take our trip this year in Northern Minnesota in late August with the whole no Canada thing. A lot of people resorted to the same thing. It was hard to find a place with an availability. Great business for the Minnesota resorts and outdoor retailers. A worker at Cabellas said their business was up 50% from the previous year.

The fishing was abysmal though. We left a day early. Was getting pretty old hearing my grandpa say, "that's why they call it fishin' and not catchin'".

Extremely low likelihood that Canada will open the boarder next summer. Resorts are planning on no US traveler season until 2022.

I snowmobile in Wisconsin every year (Jan) and will be skiing at Keystone in Feb. not post Covid but going regardless.

I almost did this too, but it was looking too hard to find a place to stay. I would imagine that the extra fishing pressure on MN lakes hurt the fishing. I usually do a fly in out of Red Lake. Great fishing every year I have gone there. Should be good in 2021 with no fishing for a year.

I'm hoping at least cross state travel opens up much more next summer because spots I like to go in WI were way busier than most years this year.

The past few years we have done fly-ins through Halleys camps out of minaki ontario. Fishing is good and their cabins have flushing toilets which is nice for a fly-in. Our next trip will be to their drive to cabin.

If you don't mind a long drive, it's 1000 miles one way from my home in North Iowa, check out wakusko falls lodge on tramping lake in Snow Lake Manitoba. Not many places where 30+ inch walleye are relatively common but they are here. Its were when we went 10ish years ago. We made the trip 5 or 6 times and each time someone in our group caught a 30+ inch walleye with the largest 36 inches. My best was 34 and a half. Just make sure you bring your camera and don't leave it in the cabin like my dad did that day.

I have caught several 30 inch walleyes at the place I go, but none any bigger than 30 inches. The fly in I go to has hot water, toilets, furnaces, Wifi. The guy does a great job. Just hope he can hang on through all this. Got to be hard to hold it all together in a business like that with no income for a year. It is 860 miles to Red Lake, so almost the same trip. Goes fast going up, slow going home.
 
Considering a 1st qrt 2022 trip to Southern Florida, Cabo or Puerto Vallarta. Would take 4 adult children (3 married) and 3 grandchildren (as of now). Would rent a 6+ bedroom house with pool and hopefully water view. Plan to make memories for all going!
