I thought it was against the law for cyclists to wear headphones (not that it stops me, but I'm pretty sure it is. Also think driving a car with headphones is illegal but not 100% sure).

Raining there isn't much you can do. Biking is my go-to training when it is hot because I can carry water. It's never too cold during an Iowa summer to bike. Until there's snow on the ground, you can bike. Bike intelligently and you don't have issues with cars (I've put in about 2,000 miles this year on my bike), mostly in Ames.

And there's only snow on the ground in Iowa, what, 5 months a year? I get what you're saying. I enjoy biking. I'm not saying it's bad. You're just going to have different health goals with cycling than you would with a program like P90X.

And the benefit of getting into a routine with P90X is that you can do it all year round.

The vast majority of people could never put together a workout program that would deliver the same results as P90x in the same amount of time. I know I couldn't. I just don't have the time or desire to spend countless hours researching something that a professional has already done for me.

I don't disagree. I think it's a great program. I'm just saying that it's not the only way to go. People looked great before P90 and P90X (or Insanity, or Cross Fit or any of those other programs) came around.

I will always wholeheartedly recommend things like Crossfit, Farrells, etc. for people like me who just don’t have the will to work out at home. There are 10k other things I’d rather do while I’m at home. When it comes to physical fitness I need to be pushed and a classroom environment was really beneficial for me.

This is very true for lots of us. Even if I could afford to, I would never buy the equipment or build an area to work out at home. There's something about a gym atmosphere that changes my attitude as soon as I walk in.

Modify some of the moves at first and you'll be fine.

I honestly need to lose about 50 pounds before I attempt it - otherwise I might end up killing myself in the process. My "other" brother-in-law (not the one that can eat anything and not exercise and not gain a pound - his brother) does P90X. I've seen the regimen and the workbook, not to mention I've been doing P90 (a much lesser version of it) on and off for the last 3 years. I know if I were to try doing it right now I wouldn't be able to handle it. P90X has a way of breaking people already in some kind of shape down and building them back up. It would probably end up destroying me before it had a chance to build me.

Well I don't know where you're at now, I was 240 when I started. I thought I was going to die the first week, but it got better every time.

Let's just say that I am WELL north of that, and even when I do get myself in top shape I may never crack 240 - when I was 16 years old and wrestling my 7% body fat weight was 215. I'm quite a bit taller now, and by the time I'm done with this I'll certainly be more muscular than when I was then. I'm 6' 2", and when I get myself into shape I will naturally be built like a linebacker.

By the time you sift through all the varying opinions on workout styles and routines it may be easier to go with a routine that's already planned out for you by a professional.
