OWH article: ISU talent level

Okay straight up Iowa State has had quite a bit of talent, but probably not the same as what South Florida has right now. We have had players at certain positions, but rarely did we have a team full of "real" division I quality talent. We had some years where almost all out first string players were top quality, but than our second stringers weren't. It is damn hard to recruit people to Ames, Iowa and just face the fact, I don't see it as putting down Iowa State and he is definitely putting a little spin to it, but you sort of have to.

Straight up two star talent in Florida is probably better than a lot of three star talent in Iowa, they actually play against competition day in and day out. You look at some of the kids Dan got and they really weren't playing against people at all, he did find kids like Carstens, Danielsen, Rosenfels, players like that who either walked on or weren't very seriously recruited and helped them succeed. Straight up though, Dan spent too much time in Iowa, especially with the kids he was recruiting in Iowa, especially the lineman, he truly screwed up in the lineman he got in Iowa and it is prolly a big part why the line has been so bad.

OMG, it's all spin. He threw Ames, and how impossible it was to recruit (and I guess coach since he continually had to learn how to do it harder) it is here, under the bus repeatedly for 5 years.

Now he is in full beg for a new job mode, so he wants all prospective AD's to realize that he can recognize talent, and work with it. So all they need to do is just give him a chance.

Again all of the *** licking the guy did to the media is why he is even spoken of, let alone to.

Come on Tina, have some self respect, you don't have to listen to that bullsh!t anymore. I am here for you, all you have to say is "I deserve better."

How about the $1,000 suit during the hightlights show, or talking about past bowl appearances, or the fact we beat the Hawks(is there a reason they think it's our superbowl?) .....

I think you all are misunderstanding the quote. He isn't necessarily saying right there that USF currently has talent that far outweighs anything he had at ISU. I think he's saying that, from a recruiting stand point, he is geographically closer to more great possible recruits than he ever was at ISU (or Wisc or Iowa). I think he just didn't convey that clearly. Calm down. Sheesh.

I think you are correct.....props to you, I feel alot calmer after having read your post.

No new news here. It has been and will be very difficult to recruit to the midwest, especially from Florida. Get ready for some more mediocre play.

Perhaps. But you know schools like Nebraska, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Notre Dame(not this year, but historically) etc etc. are not located in Texas or Florida and seem to do okay?? It's more about attitude than geography.

Biggest talent states are Florida, California, Texas, New Jersey, and Ohio. Just go t rivbals for ech state and you will see Rivals 150 for a better state such as Texs and Rivals Ten for someone like an Iowa. West Virginia and Wyoming players totally suck air. WV must import all their players from Florida. Coach charisma like a Bo Pellini or Hayden Fry really helps. Check out the Callahan charisma...

Why am I the only one insulted by McCarney on this? Where was he the last 12 years with all this top level talent he told us about? Obviously, he is singlehandedly responsible for the rise to the top of South Florida.

Please go and find me a quote from ANY coach that says his recruiting class is not that good. Get real, every coach in the country tries to pump up their recruits so they can build some excitement for the upcoming season, which in turn sells tickets. I've been a Cyclone fan for about 35 years and was too young to really enjoy the Peach bowl game, so for me DMac gave me the most exciting times I have ever had with Cyclone football. The win over Pitt in the insight.com bowl was by far the most fun I have ever had at a single sporting event. I do agree it was time for a change at guard, but I thank DMac for a few good years he gave us.

Thank you for proving me wrong (oh wait, you didn't Tina).

Again, I am here for you, just say it with me "I deserve better."

I think this has been the best post in this thread. ISU is not getting the cream of the crop in Texas and Florida, but we are setting up necessary pipelines. The biggest part of recruiting I believe is simply name recognition. ISU has the same record as Notre Dame in football this year, still ND will have a top 10 recruiting class this year (I think they were #1 last time I checked.) It's all about getting the Iowa State name out there and conveying the great things that Iowa State has to offer. I don't buy into the bull that we can't recruit because of geography, there have been and always will be successful recruiting teams that aren't in places like southern california or texas or florida. I mean, look at Michigan, they don't really get the best weather there, but they have the fan base and stadium and tradition to sell to the recruits. Iowa State fans must realize the best thing they can do (outside of money donations) to their University is to represent their team/program as much as possible and fill the stands and get the wins and ratings to get yourself on TV. If I am a big time recruit I am gonna want to go somewhere that I will play against some of the best talent in the nation (big 12 - we have that), play in a capacity stadium (we are working on and getting much better at that), and be on national TV playing in top 25 matches (still got A LOT of work to go there.)

That being said we may never get the big time talent in Ames, then again maybe we will - you never know in college football and a lot can change in 10 years, 5 years, hell even 3 years, but I don't think Mac was ripping ISU for that, I think he merely liked the fact of being closer to where the recruits in florida ARE. These things take time, but all you new Cyclones (including myself, I am only 22 years old) need only look into our past to see where we have come from as far as the football program is concerned, it's quite amazing. 1912 and still waiting, but when that day comes you know it will be something beautiful. - If we want big time talent at Iowa State, we need to build ourselves up and not worry about others. Cyclone. tradition.
