OT - Cutting Cable

So, I had to bite the bullet a little bit and sign up for two more years of Dish. I can't get the locals at all via antenna and I was already on the hook for another year with Dish. So, I ended up getting the America's Top 120+ package with DVR and a Joey for ~$75 a month. The plus side is that if I change my mind or whatever, it's only $10/month to cancel instead of the normal $20/month.

@Cybyassociation @DandyCyclone I installed this outdoor antenna in my attic this weekend and I'm pulling all the channels. I live in West DSM and I'm even getting the elusive channel 5 with a really strong signal. I had my doubts but the work was well worth it and I couldn't be happier with the result. Beats the hell out of having an antenna at every TV.

After cutting the cord a month or so ago I am starting to have some fear built up now that football season is here. DirecTV Now still does not have local channels (yet) so I am going to have to hope some ISU games are on network apps such as Fox Sports Go. DirecTV Now subscriptions give you a free log-in to some network apps but inevitably I will probably run into some issue and I'll have to watch the game at a bar or something instead of at home.
There is no reason to be worried you won't get all of the ISU games. I had Playstation Vue last year (DirecTV Now has every channel Vue has) and was able to watch every ISU game. The only reason why I went back to Mediacom is because they practically begged me to come back with mail promotions. I have Tivo TV, 60 MBPS internet, and phone locked in for $65/month total ($78 with fees) for 2 years. I can probably work cord cutting to still be a little cheaper but this was too good of a deal to pass up for cable.

The Akron game will be on CBS sports. Vue doesn't have this, but you can sign up for a free trial of Hulu live or fubo.tv.

Yes you are correct. I don't think Mediacom has it as well so I will do exactly as you suggested, do a free trial of one of the streaming services that does have CBS Sports Net (Hulu as you said) and cancel it right after the game.

I called DirecTV last week and cancelled.

They called me back about 3 hours later and got my bill down to 37.50 next 12 months.

Wow. When I called and cancelled they offered to knock off like $20 per month. Honestly, it wasn't going to matter, I'm was tired of having to haggle with them every time the billing resets.

I went through the whole process. The lady I first talked to could only knock it down 15/20 bucks and I said nope, I want to cancel then. We went through the procedure to cancel and everything. Then an account manager called me back 3/4 hours later and could reduce it way more.

Yeah, I've been through the whole song and dance with them but I was ready to just be done. With the deal you got it would have been tough to say no though. The other problem I had was that in our neighborhood I can only get Centruylinks 7 Mbps service and I was capping out at maybe 3. We couldn't even stream netflix with our internet service, so regardless I was switching internet over to Mediacom, which would have only driven my cable bill up...

Ah yeah. When I was on the phone with her I had Dish and Mediacom stuff up and telling her this is what I could go get right now. Or switch to streaming devices for cheaper even. But I didn't have to get into another new contract with them, so this current contract runs out in May so we'll see how I feel come then.

Mediacom is seemingly becoming more and more unreliable speed wise for us causing more buffering and what not so that is pushing us back to DirecTV some too.

So I'm a month down this road. I bought a couple of antennas and had terrible luck with reception so I ended up emailing Mohu tech support. I found out that a few stations still broadcast in VHF, most antennas only have a 20 mile VHF range and from where I live NBC and ABC were about 30 miles away and transmit in VHF. I ended up buying a Mohu Sky 60. It has a 45 mile VHF range and a 60 mile UHF range. I mounted it in my attic and hooked it up, still wasn't get NBC. So I randomly unhooked the amplifier they included and that solved my problem. So that's probably worth checking into if you're having reception issues. Now I'm good to go with local channels and I ended up doing sling orange and blue. I did up my internet speed from mediacom but it's still saving me $40 a month over what I had.

It will be good for you to get out :)

So I guess I am looking for another service to try this fall. Did Sling last year and mostly liked the service but the customer service is questionable. Pretty sure they have a big problem with getting accounts hacked and I had Discover shut my card down soon after I cancelled the service when basketball ended. My email / logon had been changed so not going to risk another attempt.

Anybody done the Directv Now? I'm currently using Sling on my Fire stick and really like it, because I'm able to use 3 TV's at once on my subscription (so my daughter is using one of those in Ames while I'm using two in TX which is kinda cool).

I was planning to resume my Vue as football season approaches, but I see their prices have gone up a good $10 per month.

Anybody tried Hulu live yet?

On their web site it's $40 per month and has all the channels that Sling's Orange + Blue has, but more. Hulu even has the CBS sports net, which the Akron game will be on.

Here is a screen shot of sports channels included (in DSM area)
