I’ll take Buf’s word for it, but that’s too bad he left the team. I had hopes he would still be wrestling for a starting spot for conference and post season. I always liked his motor and attitude.

That is exactly right! Thank you. Tom is providing what should be introductory information in the heat of the match. What is happening on the mat needs to be the primary focus. Kyven has to interrupt him to talk about the match. It's like being at a movie where someone is talking, an irritating distraction.

Alex Mackall steps away from Iowa State Wrestling

Man, what a bummer. Not having Mackall in the room to push Kysen and vice versa is a huge blow.
I was hoping for Mackall to figure it out, take the starting gig back over, then come back next season so we could redshirt Kysen. I felt like Mackall would have done better in the dual situations than Kysen has thus far, but if he can't beat the kid in the room it is what it is.
If I'm Mackall, I'm working hard, talking to the coaches, and figuring out how to get past Kysen's solid D rather than walking away or transferring.
That said, I have no idea what the circumstances are behind it all. I'm sure the man has his reasons.

Just saw Jacqueline's post. That pretty well explains it. Best of luck Alex. Go enjoy being a family man!
Please remember that this is a free for the Hawaiian, the Cuban and Redding. They still have 4 more years and are getting invaluable mat time this year.

I just hope the freshmen don’t get frustrated/lose confidence as they grow this year. I know Kysen and the Cuban aren’t used to losing, but man they’re both close to breaking through. Great learning year and hopefully they keep their heads on straight as they grow through the lumps
The Cuban is going to be ok. And 125 gets it too.
The three true freshmen on varsity are going to win a lot of matches for ISU.
Redding is going to be really good when he’s done. And imagine the Cuban in 2 more years with good nutrition, good weight training instead of seriously lifting bricks and chasing chickens and then having 2 more years to still wrestle?!?!?!
