Callin' Baton Rouge is one of my favorites songs of all time, ever. Maybe #1. I did not realize that it was a cover. It's good, though the Garth version is still my jam.

Both versions are great, done a little differently in style as the Oaks have the 4 part harmony and bass line and Garth sped it up a little more when he covered it. The ORB recorded it in 1978, Billie Joe Spears recorded it in 1980, New Grass Revival recorded it in 1989 then Garth recorded it in 1993 and made it the big hit everyone first thinks of.

New Grass comes to mind first. Our GM played the fiddle and loved New Grass Revival.

We had to play that thing every morning.

Every. Morning.

The only version I knew was from New Grass R.

Got to see John Cowan sing Callin' Baton Rouge at a John McEuen show this past year.

I saw New Grass Revival in August 1986 in Grimes IA and was blown away by how good they were. Too bad they didn't stay together.

She paints her nails and she don't know
He's got her best friend on the phone

Did you think that I would cry
On the phone?

Don't really know how I got here
I got some pictures on my phone

It's bitter sweet to hear you laugh
Your phone is ringin' I don't wanna ask

Saving dimes, spending too much time on the telephone
Who says you can't go home?

I'm the one for a "good time call"
Phone's blowin' up, ringin' my doorbell

Hearing you whisper through the phone
"Wait for me to come home"

Trash the hotel, let's get drunk on the minibar
Make the phone call, feels so good getting what I want

One good Glen Campbell song deserves another.

She'll probably stop at lunch and give me a call
But she'll just hear that phone keep on ringing, off the wall.

The Beatles

You Won't See Me

When I call you up

Your line's engaged
I have had enough
So act your age

Back in the USSR

Been away so long, I hardly knew the place
Gee, it's good to be back home
Leave it 'til tomorrow to unpack my case
Honey, disconnect the phone

Barbara Mandrell (of course) - Operator Long Distance Please. The single reached #9 in 1982 on the Billboard Country Singles chart. "Operator... I can't wait for him to call me..."

Barbara Mandrell - Woman to Woman. This single reached #4 in 1977 on the Country Singles chart. Spoken word intro: "Now, I don't know how you're gonna take this/You might even hang up the phone..."

Don't know if this was posted yet or not, but Rockwell's Obscene Phone Caller, the follow-up single to Somebody's Watching Me. The song reached #35 in 1984 on the Hot 100.
