Austin Nichols will not return to the Memphis basketball program, his father has told @CBSSports. Details coming.

Austin Nichols asked for his release 7 business days ago. Memphis denied the release today. Nichols plans to appeal and/or hire a lawyer.

"A source told ESPN that Baylor, Marquette and Notre Dame were among the schools which called to check on Nichols' release, but the school wouldn't grant one."

My educated guess would be the worst of those 13....

Not sure if Duke will do this, but to think a school is above doing this type of thing is pretty narrow minded. If it was like the NBA, with no personal relationships, I'd drop senior to be Marshall Plumlee, but obviously that won't happen.

Find the one with the richest parents and ask them to pay his tuition for a year and when give them tickets/memorbilia worth the value of his year's tuition after he graduates? Idk. I'm just spitballing here.

With two brothers making NBA money who played for Duke, would seem like Coach K could get one of them to pick up the tab for his last year there.

No one is dropping $60k out of their pocket so their son or brother can be dropped from scholarship to make room for someone else.

Duke has 8 players from last year returning and 5 recruits coming in. Who are they going to force out to give him a scholarship?

Good point I was just speculating. Thanks for looking at the numbers and getting rid of a player doesn't feel like a move Coach K would make... but remember when Fred took on Kane there were no scholarships available, until Armardi was released and went to Oregon. If there is a talent scholly situations find a way to work out.

Agreed, but I'm not sure someone would push an eligible player out this late to make room for a guy that has to sit a year. That would really shine a bad light on a coach if they were to do that.

Kane being immediately eligible and a little earlier in the summer to give the guy leaving plenty of time to find a team, was a different situation.

We at least got to contact him, don't we? Of course, I know nothing about his 'style of game' or how he fits in This may sound like sour grapes butt Matt A. probably already contacted him before it was even publicized he was transferrring. Look for St. Johns to show up on his eventual list soon. lol

I bet he lands with marquette. Their coach may have a connection to him through duke. They were also one of the first to try and contact him

Yes please.

Agree completely. Looks like a nice player. Missouri loses 2 of their top 3 scorers to transfer after a 9-win season where they averaged only 60 points per game, almost last in the country. Yikes!
