***Official Spring Game Thread***

I'm excited about Mangino, no doubt about it. But, it might take several years for this team to get proficient with his new system. That's just the normal learning curve it seems.

And just about the time we get it figured out, Mangino will probably leave for a new head coaching gig somewhere and then we'll start all over again. I guess that's just how it happens nowadays, but it's kinda hard to get any consistency in building a program that way.

Austin Arnaud had 4 different OC's in his years at Iowa State I think? How in the world can you expect to be good at anything when it changes every year? You can't.

Stability is huge in building a good football program. ISU has none of it right now.

Arnaud only had three. Cotton, McFarland, and Herman. And Herman was the only one he had under Rhoads. Hard to fault Rhoads for not retaining Chizik's staff.

Also, it's not like the offense is completely starting over. They are still running a spread with similar personnel. Rhoads could have switched to a pro-style system had he wanted, and some on here thought he should have done that.

So we have six new coaches and three holdover coaches (two Burnhams and Sturdy who shifted positions).

That is almost like hiring a new head coach and starting over. Paul has been head coach since 2009 (Missouri Western) and his original hires were Wally and Shane Burnham and Clayton Oyster. Yancy McKnight was already in place. Todd Sturdy from St Ambrose began in 2012.

New 2014 ISU fball coaches are:
Mark Mangino, OC, Youngstown State
Brandon Blaney, Oline, Youngstown State
Stan Eggen, DE , Moorhead State
Maurice Lindquist, Secondary, Baylor
Louis Ayeni, Running Backs, Northwestern
Tommy Mangino, WR, Washburn

Strength guys are the same with Yancy McKnight (2008/Missouri Southern)and Clayton Oyster (2009/SIU-Edwardsville) and Erich Anthony(2013/ISU).

Football Operations are the same with Markus Alleyne (2013/Concordia/Vanier CN).

Recruiting: Nick Uhlenhopp (2011/Graceland), and Gerritt Chernoff (2011/Michigan).

Six Grad Assistants are Pete Brown (2013/Lindenwood), Mitchell Moore (2013/UW-Whitewater), Shane Dowty (2014/UI), Derek Day (2014/Western Kentucky), Brett UGo Beucker (2013/ISU), and Rod Grace (2013/Tenn State).

Based on coaches comments, and how young we are yet again its going to be loooooong season. Our schedule is brutal (yet again) so to be honest I'm not expecting more than 3 wins. However, cyclone fans are awesome and tailgating will still be a ton of fun so at least theres that!

I am tired of hearing how windy it was in describing QB play. Whoever we choose better be able to throw in the wind! News flash, Jack Trice is a wind tunnel. Always has been, always will be.

Arnaud also had three different head coaches. That was a pretty awful example to use.

It was very windy. No rain, but very windy. The passes looked like waffling ducks. Looked like 5 yard passes were okay, but the 20 yard bombs fluttered like banshees in the wind. The receivers were stabbing at lob balls twittering in the air. Did I say it was very windy in JTS?

Some on here are complaining too much. Maybe they didn't look good yesterday, but it was a spring game. Almost as irrelevant as the summer CCL men's basketball participates in.

Yeah, you're right. Having 3 different head coaches and 3 different OC's, and 3 different offenses to learn is a horrible example of ISU not having the stability you need to have a successful football program. Geeez. Whatever.

Wow, did someone get up on the wrong side of the bed today? .

Ha. This is what I said to myself when I read your rant! Then I read you using it to describe someone who disagrees with you.

That has nothing to do with this staff though. It's just stating that we fired McCarney and had a coach who left after two years.

During last season the common theme on this website was the idea Rhoads needed to let somebody go. Most people agreed on Mess, some went as far to say the whole offensive staff and some even thought a lot of the defensive staff should be gone.

Now some of you are complaining about having so many new coaches.

I hate to have a lot of turnover in the coaching staff, but after last year, can anyone honestly say that they really want the offensive coaches that where at ISU back?

Are they are the same people?

I would gladly trade a win or even two this season due to a new system for finally getting a competent OC in here.

I haven't seen it anywhere but does anyone know the spring game attendance? Looking around the stadium I estimated 7-8k. Never saw an actual estimate though.

Hoping someone can help me out. I was sitting in the front row, so I couldn't see it that well, but on third downs, were our receivers running routes passed the sticks or not? If so, were making progress from last year.

I was just showing how young and inexperienced we are working together as a staff. Recruiting may be a little slow this year as we reestablish contacts with the kids.

They weren't
