***Official portal tracker thread***

The post specifically said football players. And it means exactly what he’s getting at. There will be several thousand players who at best have to drop down and many will be out of football.
Technically there has to be spots for almost everyone in there -- they came from a team to start with. They had to have been on a team already to now be in the portal. Not all expected to reach D1, surely.

The portal includes all levels of football, so obviously not all of them will go to D1. A more interesting data point would be just D1 transfers still open compared to spots still open, i.e. rate at which D1 players are falling downwards.

I know there was all the angst over Campbell poisoning the well when he left and what not but it's incredible to me that 55 guys all decided it was preferable to enter the portal instead of some of them trying it out with the new staff. I'd like to someday know the whole story behind it.
Not all wanted to enter the portal.

Not everyone in the transfer portal expects to be playing D1 when they move. The portal applies to all NCAA institutions, and not only to football, so these kinds of shock statistics do not mean a whole lot.
Yeah, the numbers are crazy, but they do sometimes need context. In addition to players not expecting to be D1, I think it's somewhat common for walk-ons who were already considering leaving football to enter the portal just in case. Or a borderline player who cares about academics transferring primarily for grad school and entering the portal just in case they want to play at their new school.

I could see us being done at RB, we've got Ryver Peppers, Jayden Jackson, Aiden Flora, Cam Pettaway, and Salahadin Allah. However, there are a couple unsigned RB's in the portal that were offered by JFR last year at WSU:
- DJ Dugar JR Okie State
- Travon "Hankey" Pankey Wazzu (could see them bringing him in)

Something I found interesting, is that Dylan Lee was offered by JFR when he was at SDSU, kind of surprising Lee didn't stick around.
Don’t forget Caleb Francois is coming in at RB as well

I have to assume that 10k includes non-D1 players or something, because for D-1 the only credible numbers I can find are in the 4,500-5k range. An increasing and still alarming number for D1, but nowhere near 10k.

I guess it depends on if you trust a random X account or you trust AI to find accurate information that is current. Both are notorious for being very inaccurate.

I have had multiple AI versions From ChatGPT to Grok, give completely opposite answers when asked more than once, on the same question.

And well Social media is full of everything from fake to just inaccurate info, especially when trying to prove the posters point.

My guess is its probably somewhere in the middle. I also assume he is counting all NCAA football players, so everyone from D1-D3. Because some will move up, very often D2 move up to D1, especially at the FCS level, and often people end up moving down. So I assume it includes all, not just D1 as shown here.

Not necessarily if you consider HS/JUCO recruits.

If part of the new landscape is some schools/coaches replacing the bottom X of their rosters. Might make sense to bring in players with potential and push out existing scholarships.

Unless teams are reducing their rosters.

All the JUCO kids, other HS players…why get held up by a ‘mid’ guy when a HS kid with more potential & $0 cost is available?

I think a lot of of these kids thought there was gonna be money everywhere after this NIL deal changed. Guys that probably had no business asking for money, were probably asking for money.

You see a kid somewhere with more time to develop from Juco or high school and he’s $0…why wouldn’t you take him over a 2/3 deep who’s asking for money?

So does Matt Campbell get any credit for future Iowa State success? Or is credit given completely for rebuilding the roster after Campbell gutted it. IMO a lot of our transfers over estimated their value.
