In passing. I don't think he's a bad guy at all and it wasn't the sense that I got. Just not very talkative and a no nonsense demeanor. I just think that type of coach is going to have troubles in this college football landscape.
You do realize he's coached college football before. Were there rumblings at SDSU or WSU that his players didn't like him.

Or just as important, his assistants. They all have been around the college football world and coached under some really solid HC's (Fritz, Freeze, Jones, Kiffin, Eck, Monken).

Not sure why anyone would have concerns about this staffs ability to relate to players. Just the opposite.

Over a dozen of the SDSU kids that didn't like him followed him to Washington State.

The “Jimmy in unlikable” comments are interesting.

Here’s my guess:
- He is a stern looking dude. He lightheartedly talked about his RBF in his opening press conference
- Several depth guys have left. It could be that they don’t fit our scheme or it could be that the relationship just isn’t there
- He spoke about loyalty at wsu and bolted after a year. By all accounts ISU is a “dream job” for him, but coaches do lie.
- Jimmy had a nice podcast with John Walters on CyCast. He talked at length about the importance of blending coaches and their families into the facility with an open door policy. It’s important the players see what it means to be a good husband and father.
- The staff has to work within a budget. We have $14M to spend but that has to go toward starters. We can’t pay a guy who doesn’t fit the scheme or isn’t all in.
- He’s got HS kids committing to ISU site unseen, from traditionally non ISU recruiting grounds. They must want to play for him for some reason?
- We had 10 years of Matt Campbell who is a cerebral, thoughtful speaker. He cried at senior day and spoke about more than just wins. A real players coach.
- We haven’t had a chance to get to know the staff because 1) it only recently came all together and 2) they’ve been 100% focused on roster building.

To sit on here and hype up the next coach is fine. Just understand the reality that something special walked out the door.
I think many of us are just optimistic that Mr Rogers has the ability to build on what CMC has accomplished. Every coach comes with a slightly different skill set but the fundamentals are the same. A lot of our success going forward is outside our control. If the powers that be can't figure out a way to stabilize college sports, it may not matter too much who we have as coach.

Saban point was it would be like the NFL that has a mini camp after the draft, by moving spring practice back after the school year ends. allows the coaches to see the players that they will have in the fall. If you had the spring practice in late May or early June, you not only have better weather in the North, allowing you to get outside more, you could also stop this current trend of getting the high school recruits to come into the school in January and miss their final semester of high school.
Start spring practice June 1st to the 15th, and those kids would be at the university in time to allow the coaches to see them in practice. The players are staying at the school all summer long anyway to take classes and work out so this just makes it easier for everyone.
Yeah that’s a good point about the HS kids

Competing in, and winning are two different things. I think we can get to the playoff but ask Texas Tech what playing with the big boys is like.
I'm probably splitting hairs, but there is a level between national championship contender and what Campbell did. And I don't mean that as a knock on Campbell. He had historical success here for Iowa State - there is simply no disputing that.

We lost two conference championship games and went 18-20 in the three seasons in between. This last year we went 8-4 and left some wins on the table. Injuries, of course, have a lot to do with that so again - not knocking Campbell.

Our ceiling may not be that much higher, but I don't know that we've necessarily peaked and I think there is room in terms of consistency as well.
