***Official portal tracker thread***

Doesn't mean something special didn't come. Matt took us to great heights but he didn't peak the summit.

If you think we should be competing for national championships then your delusional. Only maybe 15 teams in college football can say they have the ceiling to accomplish that. That's crazy.

For Iowa State the summit means winning a football conference championship, Matt didn't do that. Will Jimmy be able to do that, I don't know, but that is what Matt and every other Iowa State football coach in the last 20 years has tried to build for and accomplish. Win the conference and then playing in the playoffs is all upside.

It would be a very fun exercise to see what kind of team everyone would put together with $13-$14 million in today's era. Just assuming the numbers that 247 put out about the average cost for all the positions.

Like I said in another post.... just a halfway decent starting offensive line will be a minimum of $3 million I'd guess. Same for a starting defensive line with 4 down linemen probably. So just a starting OL and DL would almost use up half your money.

Everyone loves to say... why wouldn't we pay X player $2 million?? Like Sama for example... many reports say he was getting over a million here, and was one of our more expensive players. Is a RB even worth that.... especially one with Sama's abilities? These are the tough questions Rogers has to deal with folks.
For ISU it's like a fantasy football draft where 50% of the people have $500 to build a roster and the other 50% have $250 (ISU).

Gotta spend on position groups where it makes a big difference between being great & average. And elite talent is scarce.

NFL teams understand that it's important to spend on: QB, WR, OL, DL & CB.

Because ISU is at a disadvantage, feels like we will need to develop some position groups. Recruit #'s from HS recruits, develop them over 2-3 year period and if they develop into studs, the expectation is they will get bank in the portal. So next man in!

Iowa State might have to do that at QB, OL, DT, LB & S positions.

Agree. I think we MUST put the money on QB... then OL, then DL... in that order.

You HAVE to have a decent QB... most important position on the field. After that, you need to protect them, and be able to push people and have a running game, so OL is next most important. Then... you have to be able to stop the run and put pressure on the opposing QB... so DL next.

The “Jimmy in unlikable” comments are interesting.

Here’s my guess:
- He is a stern looking dude. He lightheartedly talked about his RBF in his opening press conference
- Several depth guys have left. It could be that they don’t fit our scheme or it could be that the relationship just isn’t there
- He spoke about loyalty at wsu and bolted after a year. By all accounts ISU is a “dream job” for him, but coaches do lie.
- Jimmy had a nice podcast with John Walters on CyCast. He talked at length about the importance of blending coaches and their families into the facility with an open door policy. It’s important the players see what it means to be a good husband and father.
- The staff has to work within a budget. We have $14M to spend but that has to go toward starters. We can’t pay a guy who doesn’t fit the scheme or isn’t all in.
- He’s got HS kids committing to ISU site unseen, from traditionally non ISU recruiting grounds. They must want to play for him for some reason?
- We had 10 years of Matt Campbell who is a cerebral, thoughtful speaker. He cried at senior day and spoke about more than just wins. A real players coach.
- We haven’t had a chance to get to know the staff because 1) it only recently came all together and 2) they’ve been 100% focused on roster building.
Good comments. I think Rogers and Otz could be similar, especially in their public persona. If you ask a fan of an opposing school about Otz, I'm guessing they would say that he's never happy and is an unlikable person, because the only thing they see from the outside is his sideline demeanor and maybe some press conferences or interviews. But we all know that he has great relationships with players, coaches, and frankly, pretty much everyone who he meets.

For Rogers, we all still mostly have the view of outside fans who are basing most of our opinions on limited public interactions. People have made a big deal about him being intense and no-nonsense, but none of that means he has to be unlikable or not a players coach.

Idk folks. Not seeing a ton of players following Rogers from WSU. Even the players that followed him from SD St. are staying in Pullman. We have money to spend but 13mil will get used up fast in the transfer portal if you're filling out a full team with it.
I don’t think you know that.
