Part of the issue is this is the Wild West. At least in pro sports, when free agent signs, the contract amount & length is public info.
There needs to be structure and transparency, otherwise the bad actors are rewarded.
You wouldn't eliminate Spring practice. It would be the same as it always was. You would have players who want to play at Iowa State. It's asinine for an 8 win team to not have a bowl game because we only have 17 players on the roster.
Not possible. I doubt Jimmy Rogers sits or stands still long enough for rot to settle-in.Or dare I ask. Has the rot settled in?

Agree it would be tremendously helpful because at that point the athletes know who is actually doing a good job, who has connections, who is giving good advice, etc.
We are bringing in 3 star transfers and signing 3 star recruits. The only thing different is we would have 3 star recruits who want to play at Iowa State. Better than paying for academics, room and board and a state of the art training facility for players who don't want to be at Iowa State.
I agree if he was the top paid player he was overpaid. Many players that were more important to our success. However, i think he was a good RB. His ypc was almost the same as Hansen and he had some nice games when Hansen was hurt. I think he was getting better at hitting the hole and will likely be better next year.

The panic will set in if/when it takes a few days for the dust to clear and an actual roster get filled.
So what? Add an extra week before fall camp to acclimate freshmen and transfers. You could still have spring practice for the team without them.
I'd like February 1 to be coach official moving day and March 1 to be portal opening for players moving for the start of summer. All players and coaches would be required to remain where they are until then. It lets the season get fully completed, lets coaching searches happen out in the open and be announced without throwing everything out of whack, then permits new staff to have time to evaluate and meet with a multi million dollar roster before it evaporates within a week of coming to campus. A later, longer transfer portal genuinely provides players a greater opportunity to find a good fit.
Really don’t need Hawthorne, Manske or any other of our young studs with 2 or more years left to end up in suckeyeville .

It's just an incredibly short sighted and naive way of thinking. I understand the knee jerk desire, but you need to acknowledge reality, and stop acting like a jilted lover. If we only took guys who wanted to come to Iowa State we'd be at the bottom of the Big 12 more often than not. Such is the lot of a school in a small population state, in a less than sexy part of the country, with not much in the way of traditional success, and sharing recruiting territory with another power conference school.
Punishing an athlete for doing something that is completely within the rules, and is done by hundreds and hundreds of athletes at other schools, comes off so ridiculously petty. If it came down to deciding between ISU and another school, all they have to say is "If you sign here, we don't think you're ever going to want to transfer, but if circumstances change and you think that's what's best for you, we won't hold it against you. ISU on the other hand, will pull your scholarship, boot you from your dorm, and ban you from the workout facility." Which option do you think is going to be picked more often?
Again, it's understandable to feel slighted when players leave, and you find out that they care less about Iowa State than you do, but you need to make your peace with it, because that's how it works.
