***Official portal tracker thread***

Sama takes a lot of heat because of the potential people see. His raw athleticism is off the charts and people think he should hit a home run every time. Yes, he often gets a 1-2 yard loss that Hansen makes a 1-2 yard gain, but the fact is that he has a higher career YPC than Hansen, and if you try to tell me that it was all because of their freshman year, last year was 5.2-5.1 in favor of Sama. We are going to miss him.
There’s 50+ Abu Sama’s in the portal.

The kids are listening to agents who have no stake in this other than a payday if they get a deal. If Jr ends up stacking lumber at HomeDepot next year it’s no biggie for the agent.

At the same time they’re hearing how much money all these CFBPo teams are spending.
Thinking about this one...what if these players who don't get new teams become the "fill" after injuries. I know there are limits to roster sizes, but could they become walk-on with a promise to a roster spot based on performance next year. I mean, Scott Drew tested waters forcing some direction by the NCAA. Spittballing here of course.

What is crazy to me is that people were telling me the rules didn't allow ISU FB to have "walk on tryouts" to find a temporary kicker amongst the ISU student body when they had the kicker injury plague this year...

...but Baylor basketball can somehow add an NBA draft pick player halfway through the year? Wtf

I have zero doubt that some of these "agents" are giving kids bad advice and they're clearly part of the problem here.

At the same time, I don't know that it's in their best interest to tell some kid making $X at ISU he should go in the portal if he's not reasonably certain he can get at least $X elsewhere. That is, of course, assuming said agent already has a relationship with the player.

I think part of the purpose of the portal is verifying enrollment at term's start as a requirement for eligibility.

Imagine that nut kick. I know you gave up a ship for your 5th year to jump in the portal for NIL $. Would you consider being a walkon?

You have academic calendar issues. The playoff semifinal and national title games are WAY too late. That's why they got rid of portal window #2.
How is that an issue?

How is that an issue? Ban then from workout facilities. Pull the scholarship. Kick them out of the athletic dorm. Nothing prevents them from staying in college like the 90% of students not on athletic scholarship.

Recruit players who want to play at Iowa State. If they want to transfer they do it after the school year is over. Move the portal back. This is a disaster.

Like CW and Blum were saying.... if you enter the portal without already knowing where you're going... you might not be making a good decision.

Basketball actually added roster spots whereas football cut roster spots.

Good luck with that. Do you ever want to win a recruiting battle again? People need to understand the players have the power. Any punitive act against them is not going to be viewed well by athletes as a whole and other schools are going to jump on it to recruit against you, it might feel good to exact some kind of revenge, but that is not how you play this

This brings up another big ole' question. What is really is the portal trying to accomplish? Avoid further lawsuits?
That's a big part of it from what I understand. Not trying to mix this thread with basketball discussion, but that is part of the equation with the incoming Baylor basketball player as well. Head of NCAA said as much this week.

You wouldn't have your new players until the summer. You would eliminate spring practice.

Timing of our coaching change was as bad as it could be. Lots of raw emotions when kids are making big decisions.
Was thinking about that while watching bowl games. If Campbell bolts a couple days later, we play in a bowl game and guys are together practicing every day in Dec. And even if Campbell left a week earlier maybe the emotions weren't so raw and players vote to go to bowl game.

Well, new year, new coaches, new team, new heights!! Eff-it, let's kick a$$ in 2026.

Saw a reel the other day about the strong possibility the NCAA is trying to create a disaster so big congress has to step in…

They even mentioned Congress in the NCAA post.

They’ve been getting hammered in court and I think they’re done.

Rogers recruited Ryver Peppers when he was at SDSU, so we have a good chance to keep him in Ames too.
If I remember correctly, Peppers tore his achilles, so ISU might be a great place to continue his rehab. And he played like 1 play so not a lot of college game film.

A group of Jackson, Peppers & Flora is a good young core to add from.

IMO that would be giving the NCAA too much wisdom.

There is just too much dysfunction. The NCAA has no vision and is toothless. The Big 10 & SEC SCHOOLS want to sheet on everyone else.

Congress can't solve this problem, the universities need to create a group of Presidents, AD's, Coaches and Legal folks to create a structure that can withstand legal challenge.

I mean, aren't these universities supposed to employ really smart people?
