***Official portal tracker thread***

I know it happens, but it honestly does much less than I would've expected when the portal became a thing that some players would "test the waters" and ultimately come back.

Question is which players, if any, would be the likely ones to enter the portal, but still come back to ISU?
Yes, but, this is the first year of the single portal, shared NIL.... in the past there hasn't been something like 4000 players in the portal.
This year the rules are completely out the window.

People using returners at WSU need to keep 2 things in mind.

- WSU had $2m to spend. No real conference or tv package to offer any potential transfers. Those guys almost assuredly got nothing more than a scholarship.

- I think there’s a combo of animosity between MC & JP at this point…as well as MC pride wanting us to suck because he’s left that’s pushing these kids leave (I’ll give benefit of the doubt and say MC told them to make us pay to keep them). Not sure JFFb is willing to pay to keep that dynamic in the building.

Unaccountable agents telling kids there’s endless money to be had in the portal & they should ask for a ton from Iowa State because we NEED them has probably been a large part of this as well. I don’t think bringing back kids who feel underpaid is a winning strategy.

The rb room will be fine, the only bummer with losing Hansen is that he seems to be the perfect RB for the new staff. He would've been a good fit and probably put up big numbers.

As tough as the last few weeks have been, the next week will be really exciting. The silver lining to this is an action packed portal week. I think when the commits start rolling in, the Kool aid will be flowing.

The kids are listening to agents who have no stake in this other than a payday if they get a deal. If Jr ends up stacking lumber at HomeDepot next year it’s no biggie for the agent.

At the same time they’re hearing how much money all these CFBPo teams are spending.

I think it is mainly 2 things, timing and tenure. How many schools that had coaching changes had coaches with the tenure that Campbell and Gundy had? Franklin...who lost his entire recruiting class and his team was playing like dog-poo was fired early and they had an interim coach that was kept on by the new coach. We did not have that luxury. Whittingham will be interesting to see, although everyone knew it was only a matter of time before the handpicked successor was given the keys. The plot twist is, no one had rather than retiring that he would sign a new contract with a blue blood in the B1G on their Bingo card.
I thought franklins recruiting class followed him and he didn’t lose them.

RBs are diamond dozen outside the very, very top

losing hansen is probably the bigger loss than sama

I think we’ll be fine at the rb spot with whoever we bring in

jayden jackson has tremendous upside
Sama leaving doesn’t hurt at all. He runs east-west, and if there is no gaping hole, he’s a non factor. He couldn’t break tackles and had horrible runningback vision. If he was truly one of the top paid players, him leaving actually helps ISU and it explains why he got so much playing time. If it wasn’t for the KSU game when he was a freshman, no one would care he’s leaving.

There are some big, beefy offensive linemen that I'm watching, hoping they'll stay and help build the roster. I don't know that it's a dealbreaker -- they weren't getting minutes, but then again they're young.

Agree with others about keeping fingers crossed for RB Peppers.

I'd also like to see DB Surges stay. He plays some good smashmouth football.

If we can keep the young Olinemen, then pick up the one year guys to buy the young ones time to develop and rotate in a few plays, it would be the best of both worlds.

The meltdown when nobody commits publicly the 1st day the portal opens is going to be epic.
There will be plenty who commit day one. The meltdown will be for the first few hours when nothing has been announced where the meltdown people will be loud.

Losing Hansen is obviously a bigger deal, but this sounds like cope, people were always way harder on Sama for some reason even though his YPC this year was the same as Hansen.

That was because he set the bar really high early on, and coaches comparing him to Breece didn't help either.

Sama was more fumble prone. But they were both good backs. Not irreplaceable by any means. I think Vorhees is as good as both if he stays healthy. And I’m sure he’s coming.

Sama takes a lot of heat because of the potential people see. His raw athleticism is off the charts and people think he should hit a home run every time. Yes, he often gets a 1-2 yard loss that Hansen makes a 1-2 yard gain, but the fact is that he has a higher career YPC than Hansen, and if you try to tell me that it was all because of their freshman year, last year was 5.2-5.1 in favor of Sama. We are going to miss him.

To use a baseball analogy, Hansen hit singles and doubles every time he came to the plate. Abu hit homers and also struck out a ton. You can appreciate what both players bring and acknowledge one brought more consistency.
