Your previous post said people wanted him fired after three 8-3 seasons. I was there for the last 8-3 year and that wasn't the case at all.

Never said that. Third straight 4-7 season. Fall 1975. Dexter Green freshman. I lived it. Earle was conservative as hell. But he had a pipeline of talent from Ohio. Then came the magical year of 1976. Earle was loved then.

What happened to the previous post where you said people wanted to get rid of Bruce?

Bruce had a broad recruiting network in many states. Chicago and Chicago suburbs, Florida, Georgia, St Louis, outstate Illinois, and outstate Mnnesota. Buddy was from up near Rochester, NY and a big tough o linemen was from the Detroit area. Bruce also recruited Iowa very well. Jim Williams of Dowling and his son Mark helped build the network the Iowa high school network. If Woody would not have been fired at age 65, we may have kept Bruce longer.

One report I saw was that Smith put pressure on Campbell to approve Lynn as DC. So who is calling the shots in Happy Valley? And who has the leverage?

Did he put pressure or did he give his recommendation?

Lynn has pretty strong credentials and is a PSU grad. Campbell had the same DC his entire time at Iowa State and I doubt Campbell is going to run that defense at PSU. So why not take a fellow coaches recommendation. I'm sure Campbell asked Noah Pauley if Tyler Roehl would be a good hire back in 2024.

You’re on a roll this week with takes that you can’t prove. At least not anymore than those who are taking differing viewpoints.

So neither side has proof, so that is proof?

If you have followed Campbell for the last 10 years as Iowa State's head coach, do you really believe anybody at Penn State could tell him how to run his football program?

No different than Jimmy Rogers, who said at his intro press conference, a BIG reason he came to Iowa State is Pollard let him hire his coaches and run his show. I am sure Campbell would make the same demands. Because he could have stayed at Iowa State, had a great 2026 season based on all the returning players and took a blue blood job after next season.

Maybe Lynn was the best of the available options and he worked with Smith. However, USC was 12th and 13th in defense in the Big 10. Penn State was better than that. Maybe he’s a good recruiter. However, if Lincoln Riley hires the former Texas DC, who has made the smarter choice?

No insight into Pedo St, but there was a very interesting article in the Athletic this past week. Essentially, anonymous interviews with GMs and Coaches said the deep pockets are either finding ways to work around cap or are just ignoring it. By work around, one GM suggested you could give any amount to a third party and they distribute it.

But interesting part was “just ignoring it.” GMs believe no one will ever hold them accountable. Regarding Deloitte, as of last week there was no reviews happening yet and no process known. Speculation is every agreement is done, “pending review.”
Well, they’re not wrong. I mean Iowa State would get the death penalty for it…but pedo st will probably get away with it.

Came over for realignment talk and then stayed because it’s a great form that allows all kinds of topics. Really well informed group of people when it comes to college athletics and extremely active. Not as toxic as most boards although there are some
I appreciate most of friendly's post. He's not confrontational yet stands his ground. Well spoken and often times has a fresh perspective on topics rather than us who only wear Cardinal and gold glasses.

He’s solid, always disagrees with our top notch medical advice. I think he learns more from us than we do him in that area.

Lynn is pretty highly respected as a DC. He dramatically improved the UCLA defense in his one year with the Bruins.

And in his 2 years at USC the Trojans have gone from giving up 34 ppg the year before he arrived to 22 ppg last season. Also need to consider how successful defenses have been under Lincoln Riley at OU and now USC. Tough to be a DC when Riley's offenses don't dominate time of possession.

To answer your question, I'd rather be a DC under Campbell than Lincoln Riley. And it ain't close!!!

Yeah so it’s his decision, nothing was forced on him, to think so is just the highest degree of cope
I’d guess by the end things were getting spicy with everyone blowing up MC about it he was leaving or not. I’m sure he’d already made up his mind to leave and wasn’t about to fight every battle.

What we also didn’t know, was JH was retiring and how that would have played out next year.

If we go backwards in 2026 I would imagine it would have been an uphill battle to get a better offer. Also, it’s not like the schools we all expected to be his ‘dream spot’ come open often.

I believe the report that he was thinking about hanging it up as well. He just hit the retirement lotto with pedo state.
