…lIf you have followed Campbell for the last 10 years as Iowa State's head coach, do you really believe anybody at Penn State could tell him how to run his football program?

No different than Jimmy Rogers, who said at his intro press conference, a BIG reason he came to Iowa State is Pollard let him hire his coaches and run his show….
Yes, I really believe retaining Smith wasn’t an independent decision by Campbell. And that opinion (that’s all it is) is based on watching Campbell promote from within time and time again the last 10 years.
Regarding Rogers, he knows he’s working for a competent AD. Do you think Campbell can now say the same?

He’s solid, always disagrees with our top notch medical advice. I think he learns more from us than we do him in that area.
I like him. He’s helpful and a voice outside the echo chamber who isn’t some Hawk tool that just showed up to troll and never left. I do despise both of his alma maters but his heart lies mainly with his undergrad university, as it should. While he benefitted from it, he didn’t call the blarge.

Lynn is pretty highly respected as a DC. He dramatically improved the UCLA defense in his one year with the Bruins.

And in his 2 years at USC the Trojans have gone from giving up 34 ppg the year before he arrived to 22 ppg last season. Also need to consider how successful defenses have been under Lincoln Riley at OU and now USC. Tough to be a DC when Riley's offenses don't dominate time of possession.

To answer your question, I'd rather be a DC under Campbell than Lincoln Riley. And it ain't close!!!

USC’s problem was more than just their offense. They gave up 500 total yards to Illinois. 12.3 yards per pass attempt and 172 rushing yards. Gave up 28 first half points to Oregon. Their first half defense was atrocious in the last six games. Only one sack last six games. 48th best in FBS not that good. Campbell has a better handle on what it takes to make a good defense than Riley, that’s why I thought this an odd hire for Campbell.
Here’s a very good podcast. She is a top notch reporter and has covered USC for several years.

Not a Hawk troll and appreciate a voice outside the echo chamber, like you said.

So I assume they will run a 4 man front with USC’s DC?

Doesn’t that mean the two LB’s apparently going to pedo don’t really fit the mold anymore than they do under JFR?

I believe MC’s loyalty will override those issues…but could expose their LB core. I don’t expect the coach who played a hurt Rocco due to inexplicable loyalty? to bench Bacon or Ebel.

I’m really hoping Jesus will take W’s from pedo state next year like He has players from Ames.

I love a good **** show…and maybe I’m over optimistic…but I’ve got to have faith.

Was it not independent or right place/right time? I read where Campbell knew Smith from Campbell's time at Toledo and Smith was a HS HC. So they have a previous relationship. If there is a solid coach already on staff, why not hire him? Campbell also hired the PSU special teams coach. I'd be surprised if Campbell runs the 3-3-5 defense at PSU, so he's going to go outside the Campbell coaching tree to build a defensive staff.

I suspect Campbell's contract with PSU protects him if Craft is incompetent. It sounded like Campbell talked extensively with PSU's President prior to being hired, so I'm sure he was getting their assurances about his autonomy and running FB program.

But your right, Campbell worked for a competent AD in Jamie Pollard, so I'm sure he took those lessons to negotiating his deal with PSU.

Your previous post said people wanted him fired after three 8-3 seasons. I was there for the last 8-3 year and that wasn't the case at all.
I was at ISU then and there was a vocal minority that wanted him fired. Too vanilla of an offense was the problem in their eyes. When he did leave there was a fairly loud number of people that were glad and thought ISU could do better. Similar to the "Has the rot set in" posts about CMC.

For sure. But there are no guarantees. The evidence thus far seems to indicate feast or famine. Cudos to the coach who can bring it all together.
I’ve got to think most smaller school coaches would want to help Jimmy be successful for their own sake as well.

Biggest part will be getting good fits team wise.

100%

I’m telling you…it’s a buyers market.

If MC has really been encouraging these kids to bolt, he’s really screwing them over if they’re not going pedo.
I think you're right. The sheer number of players in the portal over the number of schools with the actual money to pay them is out of whack.
