***Official Olympics Discussion***

I guess they probably get good at telling after watching many, many, many pitches. Because otherwise, you've got ONE person making a judgement call on every pitch of the game.

for the most part the batter makes the first judgement. and his/hers skill (and the other player's too, like pitchers and defense and base runners) overwhelmingly determines the outcome of nearly every game.

non-sports outcomes are always determined by judge's opinion.

have a good nite.

So I guess the same logic would apply to that group of gymnastics judges, too ;)

Pretttty much. The only thing is that baseball, basketball, football have things you can obviously see that don't really need judging, but all of them have an "enforcer" which is pretty much a judge. Baseball for strike zone, foul ball, force and tag out, etc. Football for penalty calls, out of bounds, etc. Basketball for where on the court the shot was made from, fouls, clock, etc. That's why I say golf is one of the closest to objective. There's no hiding when your ball flies into the pond and you have to take a penalty.

for the most part the batter makes the first judgement.

Except for the fact when the batter doesn't swing, the ump makes the judgement which is a major part of the game...which I'd bet happens in at least 98% of all at bats.

you still haven't gotten your head around the fact that completed skill= x points, missed or fall/step out =x deduction.

If that's your definition of an opinion, then I can see why we are on different pages.

and it's judges'. As in multiple judges giving their "opinions". Not just one person making a call.

You have a good night too.

NBC: example why gymnastics judging isn't great either.

Those dudes were doing awful last I saw.

Yeah they blew it. Good news is that we have one guy in the Floor Exercise individuals, another for vault, one is reserve for rings, 2 for HB, and 2 for all around. So hey, we could still win at least 6 medals in this :)

Don't really need it, because when you hit a home run and beat the other team, one can take pride knowing there they won on their own skill, achievement and merit, not by the subjective opinion of a 3rd party.

Yeah. I've never heard baseball fans complain about home plate umps and their inconsistent strike zones.

And how many times have you heard baseball umps solely decided the winner?
I guess your logic concludes baseball is as much of a sport as rythmic gymnastics. lol

Oh it can happen, quite a bit actually. By the way, we've been talking about artistic gymnastics, not rhythmic. You're further proving your point you have no ******* clue what you're talking about.

Not often in baseball is the game decided by umps; the winner is determined by the play of the competitors and you're obviously showing your lack of a 'clue', you ******boy.

For events like Gymnastics, (no matter what kind), the winner is ALWAYS determined by the subjective opinion of a judge.

Not so for sports like baseball. get a clue *********

In baseball there is one ball/strikes ump,..... in gymnastics there are seven judges,.... your argument is weak if not void

the ump isn't the guy hitting/pitching/running/catching/stealing... these people determine the outcome

the gymnast doing the flipping/tumbling/dancing/etc has 0 say whether the judge deducts 1.5 points or 1.7 points for a reason never disclosed for the rest of time moving someone from medal contention to the cellar

This was a good thread when it was about the Olympics.

back to the Olympics talk, the girls team finals start in about 15 minutes. I've given up trying to wait until primetime to watch without seeing the results. I'll still watch tonight but I can't go all day without getting the results spoiled. Let's go out and take the gold ladies. Don't let the commies win!
