***Official ISU-Pitt postgame thread***

Are we talking about Hinson who was 1-8 and 5 points today when we hate how TJ ran him off?

Was it just defensive buy in or were they just not into the team? It sounded like Hinson didn't even want to discuss ISU's players in interviews?
Yeah, of all the things to complain about, running off Hinson is not on the list.

Honest question. Do we think that TJ is NOT looking for people who can shoot? Is it possible that those people are getting better offers and just not coming to play for ISU and he puts together the best game plan he can based on what he CAN get here?

Maybe he is saying, "nah, get lost", to a bunch of guys that can hit 35%+ from 3, if that is the case, I would question his strategy a little. But, I'm not sure that is the case.
I don't think it's as simple as yes/no. I think it's a prioritization thing, where you're not going to often get the guys that do it all, so you have to choose what are your non-negotiables vs. what you can live without.

Through two years, obviously the heavy lean into the defensive end gave a big jump to the program, but I can't help but wonder if it really hurts the game-to-game floor to not have tried to pick up another combo guard or a guy who can get to the rack off the bounce or get to the line over a third center that rarely saw the court.

It's more complicated than is he or is he not trying to get shooters. Every coach wants guys who can shoot it, but it will vary staff to staff how heavily they'll weigh defensive instincts vs. ball handling/shot creating vs. efficiency from the floor.

We need some guards that can score in the worst way. Otherwise, our offense might be worse next season. Keep in mind that Momcilivic is probably our only guy coming in that can shoot decent and I'm not sure if he will start.

Lipsey (G) - doesn't shoot
Williams (G)- not a good shooter
Guard/Wing - ?
Omaha (F)- more of defensive player
Big Rob/Tre King (F) - limited offensively

Bench -
Watson - really limited offensively (offense was mainly dunks)
Momcilivic (F)- decent offense, but a freshman
Fisch (F) - undersized and a freshman
Hamilton (G)- Freshman
Eli King (G) - barely played, not sure if he will even be here next year.

I'm not sure where our scoring is going to come from.
Tre King can be a double digit scorer (Fran F. at least thinks he will) and Momcilivic could be our version of Grady Dicck. Add a good shooting transfer and we’ll be fine.

No one’s making you. And I like TJ. I want him to succeed. But he clearly has some deficiencies. He needs to address them either threw reflection and growth or get somebody on staff to help scoring.
It's not dissimilar to the hope that Manning would be gone after football. Wins and losses aside, it's clear that something should change on that end. I'm not advocating anyone being gone, this staff is very good and I'm a believer in them long term, but you just also shouldn't look at the lows that we've seen on offense and not change your approach in some regard on that end.

Today's game was so laughably craptacular that I just had to quantify how bad it was for my own morbid curiosity. I pulled the FG% stats for each player from conference games only and used that to estimate the probability that we'd only go 14-60 from the field. Out of 2,083 simulations, we scored ≤14 buckets... zero times. This was literally-off-the-charts bad shooting.

Watson, Holmes and King were the only players who ended up in the same zip code of their average FG%. It was a season-worst performance from Jones, Lipsey, Kalscheur, Kunc and Osunniyi all at the same time.

Shrug your shoulders, burn the tape, have a beer, and wait for football season. When half the team has their worst night of the season, there's nothing else you can do.

I don't think I have ever seen a staff that does have you? Yet every year many have met pink slips because the ball doesn't go through the hoop.

So are you suggesting firing the staff? That's a hot take.

How did I know this would taken like that. Are you drunk? Heck no.......but it's the coaches ship.

He gets all the blame for winning AND losing.

I’m good with cutting the kids some slack. It’s not like they don’t want to make shots.

I think it’s fair to question roster construction while watching all these mid majors with kids that can shoot threes and are no less athletic than Holmes or Gabe. Especially when the two losses - Hunter and Williams also couldn’t shoot. Of course every coach wants athletic guys that can also shoot. Where the tough choices come are when you recruit a guy that’s maybe less athletic but can shoot vs an athlete that can’t shoot.
I think in the first year of NIL recruitment, TJ went big fish hunting and struck out on the scorers he was chasing. The target strategy for ISU will have to be revised to see to it ISU has a higher rate of success with players that can help. As you said, there's lots of kids with the ability to shoot threes out there.

I know they can do it, they are good all around recruiters. They will get the NIL/transfer thing sorted out.

I follow recruiting super loosely but the transfer season will be interesting as there hasn't seemed to have been much out there for who they're going after.

I have confidence in there being a plan though. The Tre King article from CW earlier this week was a good look into what draws recruits in.

The start reminded me of a Big 12 tourney game start ISU had against Baylor where they missed a bunch of shots at the start and fell behind like 13-15 points. Don't remember the year without looking it up, but ISU recovered with decent defense and great offense to win, unlike today.

Love the defense the Otz team have played. But need better athleticism and discipline to avoid fouling so much. But, it doesn't matter if you can hold your opponent to 10 points if you can only score 7.

Otz has got to recruit some athletic shooters, preferably guards and stretch forwards because that is today's game. Athletic players can be taught defense.

He appears to be on the right track with the recruits he is bringing in. I think his staff has also done a decent job of identifying players in the portal who can contribute and fill needed positions.

We are a little spoiled here I think by the Morris/Niang/Ejim etc. days when ISU seemingly had 5 scorers on the court at all times who could play a "good enough" defense in most cases. Defense didn't seem to matter as much, since ISU could outscore the opponent most of the time.

Disappointing, frustrating, embarrassing loss, but hopefully TJ and staff are on the right track. Just need to make the teams more balanced between O & D in order to win these days. That is true for any program IMHO. Time will tell.

The moral of this season is quite simple...You can have the best defenders in the world but if you don't have good to great shooters your going to LOSE!!
