***OFFICIAL FIRE MESSINGHAM THREAD***

Were we playing without 3 starters on the o line tonight? Farniok, tuftee (for quite a bit?) And the guy who retired due to injury in the spring.

I think losing farnioks leadership and pass protection calls devastated our pass blocking.

How about the multiple season no scoring thing, then, when you play an FCS team, you still don't score? Please, tell me when our offensive woes won't be an issue? Run on first down, zone read second down, oh ****, we are down by 14, ok we scored, now back to the zone read, oh ****, we lost. Sound familiar? There were plenty of good things that happened on offense tonight, the problem was, Mess never realized it and stuck with it, instead, we lost.

Exactly. I get they will stop it, but we quit doing it before they stop it, then go back to it and are surprised they stop it. To me it seems like Mess calls plays because he thinks it will work, not by what he sees on the field. You hear all the time that that certain guys have a gut for calling plays, well guess what, Mess doesn't have the gut for calling plays.

Honestly, losing Farinok's leadership shouldn't have been an issue. We have 5 linemen. They only brought 4 rushers the majority of the time. Should have stopped them regardless.

Exactly my point when was ****** about him not being named a captain. I know there were a lot of well-deserving guys but there is no replacing the leadership and experience of a 3 year starter at the position that gets everything started for the offense. He may not be the rah rah vocal guy but he leads by example and gets his job done.

You can have 6 OL out there but if the right protections are not called you will still get beat by stunts and and speed on the DL.
 
Just looked at the box score. number of carries by our running backs. Wimberly 8, White 7, Johnson 5, and Woody 3. If you are only going to run the running back 23 times why the **** do we need four guys. Pick one! My dad used to tell me, you take one boy to do a job you get the work of one boy out of him, but if you take 2 boys to do a job you get the work of 1/2 a boy. I think that applies to running backs, we need to have one, and a second to spell him if he has to carry the ball 6+ times in a series. If we have this amazing strength and conditioning they one guy should get tired toting the rock 23 times. Hell even just 17 or 18 times, and give the other 5 - 10 carries to one other back.

Hell I have see a lot of teams go with two backs, but I don't remember seeing to many successful offenses with 3 or more backs carrying the ball, excluding high school.

When we had our replacement center, UNI did not even line anyone up on him. He essentially had no one to block. They dared us to run up the middle.

Which is why we should have been in the pistol running down hill. You have a 7 on 6 advantage.

You are right if the calls are wrong then you are ****ed, but **** shouldn't the OC and Oline coach have someone ready to go. Isn't that the point of having a two deep. It isn't like TF went down late, he went down early and I am pretty sure we had some successful plays after he went down. If you can't make the right pass protection line calls, run the ******* ball, they are an FCS team if your 300 lbs linemen can't line up and make a hole against them then quick spouting off how good our S&C is.
 
Bottom line, we looked awful. Looked a lot like deer in the headlights from a Chizbang team.
 
Here's what I don't understand - a program like SMU has freakin' Hal Mumme as their OC, and we are stuck with this guy. You know, Hal Mumme, the guy who basically invented the most prolific offensive scheme of the modern era.

Now I'm not saying we should have someone as notable as Mumme in the box calling plays, but how about someone who's at least proven themselves to be successful at some level of college football?
 
I felt like our offense played well early. 300 yards in the first half.
Then Tom goes down and Sam spends the rest of the night running for his life.
Hard to put the loss on any one guy.
It's easy to ignore how important offensive line calls are when you're watching from the stands.
 
Did PR really say in the post game that we need to call better plays? Game 1 and he is already saying that? Holy cow was this a mistake to keep Mess around.
 
I feel like we should throw the ball down field more if we are going to be a run first team, which we were tonight. If we want to be a pass first team, then I'd be all for more short passes. Since short passes are an extension of the run game, they really aren't extremely effective if you run the ball a lot, IMO. There is a reason Georgia Tech throws down field when they do throw and we should be more willing to take some shots down field, especially when the box is packed and single coverage on the outside is inevitable.

Already been called out for this once tonight, but seriously, I could run a better offense than this. Hell, my guess is a good 20% of posters on this board could run a better O than what we saw tonight, why? Because when we see something isn't working, we don't run it anymore. When you see that an uptempo offense is working like a charm, you go with that until they prove they can stop it.
 
The play calling was just bush league. Everyone knew what we were doing except for our oline. Our running backs could not even rush for 50 yards except for SR. When we threw to our back, Shontrelle dropped a very important pass. James White would have caught it. We just call the wrong plays at the wrong time with our personal. Brun caufght one for 2 yards and Wimberly caught one for -3 yards. That will not cut it against FCS teams like Iowa.

This is a gross over statement, but I feel I could take a the playbook from NCAA football, give it to the players tomorrow, and call a better game against Iowa in two weeks than what just happened. ****, i don't have words. In a world where offense is taking over College football ours is worse than it was 13 years ago. For god sake give me the Tory Davis offense, and last years team would have won a 8 games minimum. Competent offensive coordinators have bad days. But they don't have them agains Tulsa and UNI back to back. This guy had 8 full months, the spring practices and training camp to correct what went wrong against Tulsa, I didn't see any change other than we ran the pistol, and it worked, and then we stopped running it.

Utah picked up dennis erickson, I'd go with him too at OC level.
