Official Bowl Watch thread

Why?

109th in total yards at 5388 (ISU had 3933)
111th in yards per game at 449 (ISU had 358)
127th in passing yards at 3439 (ISU had 2524)
64th in rushing yards at 1949 (ISU had 1409)
100th in points per game at 32.8 (ISU had 22.4)

Keep in mind that there are 130 teams in FBS. They were in the lower half of all but one of those categories, and in passing yards they were the 4th worst in all of FBS.

That is why people bag on OU's defense. They didn't win games because of their defense; they won games because their opponents couldn't keep pace putting up points.

I understand that, but you also have to look at other things. OU's offense is one of the most EFFICIENT in the country. They score fast and that forces their defense to be on the field more. For example in the WV game the OU offense ran 65 offensive plays and WV ran 90.

The difference in defenses between OU and OSU is small enough that it shouldn’t move OSU up.

Last year OU-UGa was one of the best postseason games. Bama, Clemson, OU, and ND. Murray vs Tuo would be great TV.

Personally, I’d have any conference champion in before ND, as well as UGa.

No team has made the CFP that has had a blowout loss by 29 points to a mediocre team with a .500 record.

Chew on that. No team worthy of the CFP should have a terrible loss like that on their record. We are not talking about a narrow loss. We are talking a complete rout. To a not very good team.

If Ohio State beats NW and looks good, even decent doing it, they are in.

I'm not saying they deserve it. I'm just facing BCS, I mean CFP reality.

People are disagreeing with this, but the table is being set to state the case for Ohio State over Oklahoma.

https://nypost.com/2018/11/26/ohio-state-needs-one-final-thing-to-make-playoff-case-complete/

"The College Football Playoff has much-needed drama. Debate will rage over the next week. Next Saturday’s Big Ten and Big 12 conference title games now have major ramifications, potentially determining the last spot in the final four.

Ohio State’s stunning blowout of Michigan created that intrigue, setting up an Ohio State or Oklahoma argument barring Georgia upsetting Alabama in the SEC Championship game. But I believe there is an easy answer — if, and only if, the Buckeyes rout Northwestern, ranked 19th by the playoff committee, next Saturday in Indianapolis, and prove that performance was no fluke.

They proved, with that 62-39 shellacking of the fourth-ranked Wolverines, their “A” game is worthy of a playoff berth, a bludgeoning few saw coming. It was a performance the defensive-optional Sooners have not shown capable of delivering, needing remarkable offensive power virtually every week to stay in contention."

When a system of selection is rigged, it's probably best to assume that conspiracy theories hold weight.

@isufbcurt are you disagreeing that a case is being made to include OSU over OU, or are you just disagreeable today?

I'm disagreeing with your continued notion that OSU jumps OU if both win. I give the committee more respect and they aren't going to be swayed by what various media and publications push. The committee can look and see that OU lost by 3 to a top 10 team, while OSU lost by 29 to a 6-6 team. It's as simple as the bolded.

I love the national media's methodology - before Saturday, Ohio State was garbage and had no chance. Now because they beat Michigan (yes, that was very impressive), they deserve to be in? Come on.

I think Michigan is a bit of a paper tiger - good, but not great. They have 2 quality wins, Penn State (blowout, their best of the season) and a 3 pt win against Northwestern.

I will not be surprised even if they are close games and both teams win this weekend that Ohio State gets picked over OU. They dog on OU defense, but lets see Ohio State play a team outside the BIG with an offense. Oregon State and TCU are their out of conference games. The BIG this year is full of mediocre teams.

Yeah OSU gave up 31 points to Oregon State. 2 win Oregon State.

I'm with Curt on this one. ESPN can push OSU all they want but their resumes are not that close

I think that they aren’t close but I also think that the committee doesn’t care about who is most deserving. OU should easily be in over OSU but people have a point that they might not be.

I think Texas wins anyway and all this discussion is pointless

I don’t give too much respect for the committee for the bs they pulled in 2014. TCU dropping from #3 to #6 after winning 55-3 against Iowa State the last weekend. TCU had the better resume and their one loss was to a top 10 Baylor team on the road in a nail bitter. OSU had a slightly weaker resume and got dominated by a 6-6 Virginia Tech team at home. I don’t exactly trust the committee to do the right thing this year either, but we will see.

Honestly i think yards per game\play is a pretty **** metric anyway.

Points per possession seems like it would be the more valid metric of a defense. Yards don't matter if you can move 50 yards but the defense always buckles down and prevents the score.

But either way, the fact that OSU is giving up almost as many yards per play against the garbage offenses in the big 10 compared to the high-powered offenses in the big 12 says that OSU's defense isn't better than OU's.

I think what you're thinking of is a "Yards/Point" stat - that would capture all the above.

If a team always starts on the 25 and scores a TD, they'd need 10.71 yards per point. An interception returned for a TD doesn't count towards the offensive yardage and would reduce that. Moving the ball to the middle of the field and punting would increase that.

Looking at the Big IIXII + tOSU for Offense (lower is better):
  • 1- OU - 11.598 yards/point
  • 2 - WVU - 12.310 yards/point
  • 3 - tOSU - 12.552 yards/pont
  • 7 - ISU - 13.678 yards/point
And Defense (higher is better):
  • 1 - ISU - 15.988 yards/point
  • 2 - KSU - 15.872 yards/point
  • 3 - Texas - 15.586 yards/point
  • 4 - tOSU - 15.439 yards/point
  • 5 - WVU - 15.274 yards/point
  • 9 - OU - 13.675 yards/point
Keep in mind for tOSU versus the others - they have not played OU's offense while the Big IIXII teams have.

For comparison's sake, Alabama is at 10.980 yards/point offensively and 20.521 yards/point defensively.

Came in here looking for information on ISU bowl game and potential opponents...

The optics that this could be Urb’s last year don’t hurt OSU’s chances either.

But unlike TCU, Oklahoma is a national brand... I don't see how tOSU can jump OU this year.
