***OFFICIAL BIG 12 EXPANSION THREAD 2.0***

I always thought Louisville would be a great addition to our conference and am surprised they are not, but maybe the execs didn't see it that way. UL's brand is far better than TCU's

You shouldn't be surprised. Louisville is a commuter school.

Let's start taking bets on this one. If UNC is in the SEC in 2014 and Miami is in the Big 12, I will literally eat a piece of ****.

He's about as good as The Dude.

UNC to the SEC and Miami to the B12 is certainly plausible but Yoda's suggestion that the B12 could eventually add two commuter schools in USF and UCF is ridiculous.

They may be commuter schools, but theyre extremely large, rapidly growing commuter schools. 50 and 60k. Give them access to a major conference and their brands will grow.

By that token, Liberty University deserves a shot. So would everyone's favorite school to poo-poo, Cincinnati (42,000 enrollment).

I understand your point, and it's certainly possible, but it's far from a sure thing that their "brands" would grow if you simply plucked them out of their sub-par conferences and placed them in the Big 12. Plus, conferences appear reluctant to gamble on a school by "grooming" them for success; if there is a paradigm, it seems to be letting a school establish itself on its own and then they get invited to the big boy conference (when their value is highest to optimize the TV contract). TCU, Boise, Utah, etc. didn't suddenly turn into winning programs when they got invites to the big boy conferences...they got invites because they'd turned themselves into decent programs and contributed value to the conference when they joined.

Seriously? Academics don't mean anything in college sports anymore. Also, the Big 12 isn't exactly Ivy League.

Seriously, how can you think that when looking at the big 10s moves or the acc snubbing wvu...academics probably won't get you into a conference but it can certainly keep you out. College presidents vote on membership not coaches and ADs.

B12 took WVU. Are they ahead of some of these other schools? Does Fox or ESPN care about academics?

If that's the case then why was that bastion of learning Nebraska asked to join? Maryland and Rutgers were selected because of demographics.

Had Nebraska lost AAU status one year earlier, someone else would be occupying their spot in the Big 10. That is a fact.

Wasn't Nebraska also warned/on probation about their AAU status? Wouldn't the presidents know this information?

All this conference expansion is all about demographics and TV sets. I don't like it but it is what it is.

We missed out. We should have taken them before the ACC did. Their basketball program is financially ranked #1 in the country and their football program is also very good. I just don't like sitting at 10 while the other conferences get bigger. Hopefully we will get more aggressive in the near future.

Yeah, not grabbing Lville was stupid. WV is fine I guess but longer term I don't see how they fit and they will always be an outsider, would rather have Lville. Leadership in this conference is just poor, has been poor, will probably always be poor.

Not really, but we are in a different position now. We are going to try and get both if we can. Do Fox espn care? no but they don't decide and I am not saying it is the only or even biggest consideration but it is clearly a factor and sometimes the decisive one. For example: Why Rutgers over uconn? Academics. Why missouri over wvu? Academics. Why tcu over Louisville? Academics. Why wvu over Louisville? Money

Miami and fsu have good academics and brand and footprint a win win win. Louisville is worse on all 3 fronts all they have is geography and performance which is something but isnt going to make up for the other two. Making them a solid second tier choice.
Big 12 does not want to become the new sec a academically.

Given that the B12 has the highest TV revenue payout per school, you are wrong.

...until the Big 10 and SEC renegotiate their contracts.

The SEC won't get a renegotiation per se. They will start their network which (unless ESPN coughs up paid for inventory) probably won't reap as much as the BTN per team.

The Big Ten should get around 30mm for T1+T2+BTN when theirs is up for bid as the PAC12 got 20.5 per school for similar rights and the B1G should get around that lump sum divided 14 ways but make up for it by growing the BTN.

Sitting at ten means probably 5 bids to NCAA and less chance to be ranked at top in football due to no playoff game. Need twelve to be more relevant. If bottom feeders get better in football, we will have even more chance not to be top team in football as we will eat our own.

Having no playoff game increases the chances to be ranked at the top, not decrease.
