Too bad the NCAA can't just set the conferences around location and all that jazz.. similar to High School how they can just change districts and what not.

Reading through this thread makes me want to empty a 1.75 litre bottle of Black Velvet into my mouth and then head to the garage and turn the car on with no door open.

Iowa State is a wonderful university that has a lot to offer students, alumni, and fans. It has a great academic reputation and is a place where tens of thousands of people, including myself, have spent the best years of their lives.

Dude...you can't polish a turd..

If the 5 "BCS conferences" were smart (and have some lawyers who are knowledgeable of collusion) they would sit down together and decide that the current 64 teams signed up to play in those 5 leagues within the next 2 years (66 if you count Notre Dame - who may get scared and join a conference - and UConn to make an even number) could just as easily play in 3 conferences of 22. I guess conferences would become more like regionals and divisions would be the new conferences.

The key would be finding a home for all the current BCS teams so that there isn't lawsuits or involvement from congressmen. It may seem like a lot financially to hypothetically ask the Big 10 to absorb the Boston Colleges of the world, the SEC to take on the Wake Forests of the world, etc., but keep in mind the massive drop in TV money that the universities experienced in 1982 after NCAA v. Board of Regents of Oklahoma when the NCAA was found to violate the Sherman Ant-Trust when the NCAA controlled 100% of college athletics TV rights (essentially operating as 1 conference) and then it was turned over to the conferences to individually negotiate their own deals. I.E. lower supply of conferences = lots more $$$ for everyone. And small conferences would stand to benefit too...so that may keep their mouths shut.

40% fewer major conferences could lead to a big time loot for the NCAA while still not being a monopoly (if the Supreme Court says 3 "brands" controlling 95% of the market is a anti-competitive then they could opening a large can of worms). Of course this would mean the Big 12 would have to agree to forgo the GOR, Texas would have to likely give up the LHN, the Pac 12 would have to accept Christian schools, Penn St would have to allow Pitt, Iowa may have to allow ISU, the supposed gentleman's agreement between Kentucky/SC/Florida/Georgia would have to be given up to allow FSU/Clemson/Louisville/Miami/GT, etc., etc.

At the end of the day there's no chance of this since too many schools would have to swallow their pride in order to see the big picture.

Congrats on your first post! It was a doozy!

Sadly, you're in a tiny minority. If ISU loses AQ (or equivalent) status our AD is doomed. ISU fans are setting record attendance numbers because we feel like PR can get us to the promised land - a Big XII title. Take that carrot away and you take away the vast majority of fans. ISU stands to be severely financially damaged by demotion. We're in an all or nothing situation and there's too much money on the line to lose. If that means involving senators, congressmen and a battalion of lawyers then that's what will happen.
I want ISU to NOT be left out and keep AQ status. I understand how it works, but conferences will do what the hell they want and TV NETWORKS so it is completely out of my hands. The money is dooming the college game and all this musical chairs is not healthy for student athletes, universities and fans. Academics have nothing to do with this, its all money driven and if that is what they want then ruin it, but lawsuits will occur which means what now a days? There are loop holes in everything. I love ISU and will till I no longer walk this earth, but I am a VERY VERY small fish in a corrupted pond and that is just the way it is.

Why would 2 major conference merge. There is a lot of power that would be lost in that happening. We are heading to 4 major conferences. Odds are the Big 12 is being active in getting bringing new schools into the conference. The ACC and Big East are falling apart, there is no reason the Big 12 wont add teams from that conference.

We're on this line of discussion as a "what if" the Big Ten and SEC add another 2-10 teams while the Big 12 sits with it's thumb up its rear end because "we like ten".

If they both expand, then both make money doing so, the power brokers in both the Big 12 and Pac 12 would thirst for a bigger conference any way they can get it down the road. People don't want to hear it but a profitable huge Big Ten and profitable huge SEC are not good for ISU's security, especially if "we like ten".

One of the issues is that to get OU and KU you may have to take the other school in the state which is also why Oregon st and washington st would likely be safe

I don't know how many times it has been posted (with links) that, at the very least, KU is not tied to K-State when it comes to conference realignment. OU may not be tied to OSU, either. The thing OSU has going for it is T Boone Pickens $$$.

Merging now with the AC would nearly shut down the remaining conference alignment. The big would be left with low end schools that they would not want.
