***Official 2026 World Cup Thread***

Just looked at the schedule for today. Why in the hell have they been spreading games out so much that some start at 11 pm Central, but today they start simultaneous games for every game time? Couldn't they have just staggered them better for the last two weeks?
They'd rather have them spread out I'm sure, but they do the last 2 games simultaneously to prevent this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disgrace_of_Gijón

They play each groups last group stage games at the same time so teams don’t get an advantage by seeing the other team play before them.

Final group games are played simultaneously. Supposed to keep other teams in the same group from trying to game the system based on results of the other game.

Ahhh, makes sense. Thanks, all.

You are correct. And also we will likely see some more collusion this year. Australia and Paraguay could both benefit from a draw, and ironically (re: the Disgrace of Gijon) Austria and Algeria.

If Algeria doesn't get a result against Austria it might turn into an international incident.

Not a soccer person, but I have been peeking in on some of these games. I think the crowds and the atmospheres and the fans are great. But I have one honest question because I hardly ever watch soccer, and when I do It's usually the women's team.

Is it gamesmanship to act like a giant pu$$y whenever you get tripped? Or are they just giant pu$$ies? Aren't they wearing shin guards? The women don't act like that.

Is the hockey fan coming out in Canada? Because they are really booing the Swiss players rolling around like they were shot in the leg.

So they do wear shin guards, but they really barely cover above the ankle these days. But you do have to realize just how hard these guys are swinging their feet. It hurts even with shin guards.

I’d liken it to the physicality of the NBA vs the WNBA. It’s just a more physical game with more slide tackles to separate balls. Sure, there is gamesmanship, but it takes a minute to recover from some of those hits.

I personally think it’s a couple things.

1. The game moves faster than it looks, and there’s only 1 referee on that massive pitch. It can be hard to see a foul. Flailing around calls attention.
2. There is some gamesmanship/strategy to it. It slows the game down. Allows time for the chess pieces to be put back into place
3. That contact hurts more than you think

These are just theories of mine though, because I’ve never played soccer at a high enough level to know.

It's gamesmanship, like NBA floppers, it gets rewarded so often it's become a skill. The WC has been reffed better, but IMO it's wildly out of control and has been for decades at this point.

The replay shows them barely being touched most of the time though. It's worse than Lebron.

Morocco-Haiti has been a fun 1st Half. Tied up at 2 with about 3 minutes still to go.
