So, this is a stretch - but taking that idea (the idea that weather info should be available always) I've been thinking about a software project.

It would be cool to create an open source "federated/distributed" weather application. I'm thinking sorta a mix between seti@home meets torrents.

Many many people have their own weather stations or sensors. Many of the existing weather satellites are "open channels" meaning you can pull data with your own antenna.

What we need to do is distribute the processing, aggregation and hosting. I'm not aware of other projects like this that currently exist, but it seems like a good idea.

I think @wxman1 can correct me here but my understanding is NWS would do this but are blocked by the likes of Accuweather from doing so

I would be very surprised if a government agency had any interest in using or distributing privately collected weather data that follows no protocol to ensure accuracy.

I was going to sit like Remy from Ratatouille and teach my wife how to cook steaks tonight (that's how I'm teaching her all the cooking). But man it looks like the wind may not cooperate.

Largely that is correct. There have been pushes and attempts in the past but the private sector has blocked them. Also they do not have the support to fund such an undertaking. It just took years for their chat system to be upgraded and more stable.

Just the visualization of this is entertaining but yeah not a great night to try and grill, maybe Sunday.

Not sure exactly what you have in mind, but lots of private weather stations sync data to Weather Underground that is publicly accessible.

I personally have an Ambient brand weather station... data syncs to their website to be able to look up conditions/history via web, however IIRC part of the opt-in is they can use/sell your data. No idea what they do with it / who ends up with it. I was somewhat deliberate about not entering address/coordinates of where mine is installed (as far as I know they don't have GPS onboard, though not 100% certain).

It is quite hilarious. I love her like nothing else but we've been together for 25 years (since early high school) so she's never had to really learn anything other than the basics like Mac & Cheese. We have a chair that I can sit on in the middle of the kitchen telling her what to do, what spices, how much, etc. Since I had all that in my head and like to wing it, as we go through each one, we're putting the ingredients, times, temps, suggestions, etc in a separate Note in Apple Notes.

Teaching her the Traeger is going to be a whole different level of "fun":)

I don't mind cold and heat, but that damn wind makes grilling so difficult 2/3rds of the time based on the position of our deck.

You weather guys - if they can tame a tornado in Twisters, it's your turn to figure out how to make the wind stop blowing from 5-6pm every day.

Garbage day in north Ames and a bunch of tipped over garbage cans. Did not see any on the street though.
