Apparently Jamaica is about to get slammed by a bad hurricane
Yup. Melissa went from a cat 1 yesterday to a cat 4 this morning. Expected to max out around 160 mph (low cat 5) as it approaches Jamaica. If you believe in such things, say a little prayer for them. Read this could be the worst direct hit on the island in their recorded history.

Melissa's winds now at *175* mph, with gusts to 215 mph. From a meteorological standpoint, it's a beautiful storm. Central dense overcast is a near perfect circle and a sharp eye.

Never been to Jamacia, but have been a few other places down there on cruises and this thing is going to cause unbelievable havoc.

So sad. My wife and I took our honeymoon to Jamaica and went there a couple winters ago on a seed trip. The resort where we went on our honeymoon is on the North side of the island but still looking to take a direct hit. Both times there’s been nothing but wonderful, friendly people. Hopefully we can still come together as a global community and help them rebuild- they’ll need it.

The frightening part is that this storm is moving less than 5 mph per this article. That's a lot of destructive power moving very slowly.

We have a trip to Jamaica planned for end of January. We’ll see if we go

Hurricane movement is fascinating to me. Its just sitting stalled right now

Might not happen for a few years.
As someone who saw what a borderline cat 4-5 (Hurricane Ian) did to Fort Myers beach, this is correct. That one was really bad, but not as quite as strong and moving a lot faster. Three years later some building are rebuilt. Some are fenced off shells.
