*** Official 2025 Chicago Cubs Thread***

I get they are trying to not overwork Horton as hes entering uncharted territory for innings pitched. Wonder if he didn't have the walk would they have let him go until he allowed a walk or a hit. Things are so much different with how pitchers are handled. Kerry Wood struck out 20 in a complete game as a rookie. Probably never see something like that again with a rookie with how they watch pitch counts these days.

I was a bit surprised they pulled him after 5. Like you posted, I thought they let him pitch the 6th until a runner got on.

But he had thrown 75 pitches over the 5 innings and could be he has a hard limit around there. My guess the fact he had a no-hitter didn't even come into play because there was 0% chance he'd go 9. Probably not even finish 7 based on pitch count.

I haven't checked, but would be curious what Horton's max pitch count is for the year. I'd be surprised if it's over 85.

As usual, Counsell makes the wrong choices with his bullpen. Brown was doing OK, but he brings in Pomeranz because "lefty on lefty." Except he blew it, as has been the norm in the second half. Pomeranz just isn't reliable.

Then Rogers, LOL, this guy has been stink on ice since he came here. Cut him loose already.

I don't know.....I get it, Horton has a history of injuries, you are trying to limit the innings

But these are professional players, if we are that scared to give him a couple more innings to see if he can throw a no hitter, then maybe he should just be a closer.

I get it, probably the right thing to do, everyone is terrified of a mark prior thing, but there is a difference in that and letting him go a bit more. but part of me doesn't love it.

Are we going to let him go more than 5 in a playoff game? Same argument could be made then, he has his whole career in front of him, why let him go deep in a wild card game?

But it isn't only the Cubs. Every MLB team is restrictive on IP. Whether it be 100 pitch cap in a game or total innings over the year. And teams that have rookie pitchers or guys coming back from TJ surgery they all restrict pitches or innings. We are starting to see teams experiment with 6 man rotations.

The reason they are restricting now is so that he is available to pitch 7 innings in a playoff game.
