I think eastern Iowa is being undersold on amounts. Could see it as high as 1/2". Looks like we're struggling to warm and with a E/SE breeze at 10-15 mph. This could have implications on power/trees if achieved.
1/10"-1/4" widespread in central Iowa.
When it comes to travel, amount doesn't really matter.
Evening drive should be fine in the metro. Icing begins around 7-8pm and spreads northeast. Overnight into Saturday morning will be the worst.

I will look it up...but HWY 3? Lived in CR area all of my life and have no idea where HWY 3 is located! OK...back to preparing for a tough stretch of the worst kind of weather (IMO)! Ice blows!
Wow...so this targeted area is wider than I had imagined it would be...yikes! I trust and respect weather forecasters...but if they are ever going to be wrong...I hope they are wrong tonight! I hate ice!
If TWC had sent Jen Carfagno...I might have called in sick today and might have showed up at the site they are reporting from!
Multiple IDOT trucks out pretreating roads this morning. Saw 4 trucks between Mason City-Clear Lake-Lake Mills-Forest City, all applying liquid.
Glad to have whole home backup generator when living out in the sticks and these ice storms.
Drove through Thompson and thought the roads looked icy then realized they were treated on highway 9
That’s the kind of peace of mind that is almost priceless even if you never use it. One of my favorite modern technologies that has been scaled to the point of being attainable for a “regular” person.
Freezing rain is awful... Would rather have snow... Hopefully it will change over to rain earlier than they think.
