***Official 2024 Chicago Cubs Thread***

I don't think you have to worry about it. If Bellinger opts in i can't believe we'd go after Soto. I think best case next year we see one of these combinations on the roster.
Bellinger/Burnes or
Soto/Taillon

That's best case but in reality my money is it will be Bellinger/Taillon if I had to bet what was the most likely to happen. Jed has been talking a big game for years about making a big splash in the offseason and has never done so which is why I doubt he will be a serious player for Burnes or Soto. Between the 2 my guess is we'd be more in on Burnes than Soto even if Bellinger opts out.

I want to know why they haven't tried Busch at 3B at all this season given the issues we had there prior to trading for Paredes. My only conclusion is he must have been just as bad if not worse than Morel defensively there otherwise they would have tried him out there by now. When Bellinger is healthy he can play 1B if they started Busch at 3B and still have plenty of OF options available.

To be honest there really isn't a guy on the roster that if there was an upgrade available that would significantly help the offense that they couldn't try moving to a different position or trade if needed. Yeah there are complications with contracts that probably can't be moved I know but at this point if you can acquire a big bat for the heart of the lineup you do it then work through any roster issues you have to accommodate the addition. Always have the DH to use if you need to push someone out of a position.
I get the feeling that Busch just isn't a MLB level defender anywhere but first.

Alcantara is the one of the three that's probably not ready. Still too many Ks. But it may of been a mental setback not getting promoted with the other two stars. I'd say maybe new coaching helps here but Caissie's numbers kinda reject that theory. Regardless it's an overload of talent we haven't seen in Des Moines since Carter and Hall.
Alcantara is ready. Too many Ks sure, but his K% in 2022 was 24.8%, in 2023 it was 24.1%, so far in 2024 it is 24.6%. It's not great, but it's consistent with who he's been at every level thus far. Last year before he got the promotion to AA he was at 19% over his last 100 ABs at A+ ball. This year he's at 18% over is last 100 ABs at AA before getting the bump to AAA.

They've been really consistent in challenging him as soon as he get's it figured out at a level. Last 100 ABs in Tennesse .310/.400/.910, 4 HR 18 RBI, 14BB to 18K.

Trade Hoerner or Paredes
DH Suzuki
RF Soto
1B Bellinger
2B Busch or Parades
3B Busch or Parades
Busch has shown a good glove at 1B. But his arm has been scary wild. Probably why he's at first.

But agree it would be great if Busch could play 2B. Having a 20-25 HR guy at 2B would differentiate Cubs.

I was the most vocal about Busch's defensive deficiencies early in the year. The issue i saw was his receiving throws something he's corrected. I think fielding has always been solid. As for his arm if he played 3rd on his way through the Dodgers system you'd think he can handle 2nd.

His improvement at first was remarkable. I think his work ethic would lead to a serviceable second baseman.

Yeah I understand he came up as a 3rd baseman. I don't have any inside knowledge, it just feels like a situation where the FO and coaches just think he's not able to do them at the MLB level. But that is based on nothing other than the way I'm reading the situation.

That said, he has been awesome at 1st and is only getting better.

A 2026 lineup with Hoerner, Shaw, Triantos, and PCA would see 200+ SB’s.
That speed would be nice, but HR's seem to be the key to winning games. So not sure Cubs could play more than 2 of those guys in same lineup unless Shaw develops into a 20+ HR guy at 3rd.

I could be wrong but Hoerner, Shaw and Triantos all seem like MLB 2B. Sure Hoerner has played some SS with Cubs, but IMO his range and arm are below average for MLB SS.

Feel like Hoerner's future as Cubs will be something Jed has to address in next 12 months. Trade him and create everyday PT for prospects or trade Shaw/Triantos to fill gaps in Chicago or MiLB pipeline.

I have no delusions of us getting Soto, but if Busch can play 2nd our lineup gets really long and we have more options on where we can add a bat in the offseason. Plus if Caissie forces his way onto the big club next spring we have options.

Shaw is untouchable in my opinion.
How many times in the past few years has someone here used this and a few years later said prospect didn't pan out as well as we thought? I'm at the point where you can never say never as he may have more value now as a prospect than he might if he is called up and doesn't perform at the level we hope he can. I'm not saying we need to trade him but if an offer that improves a big need of ours comes along and it's too good to pass on then you make the deal. It's not certain yet what position he eventually will play in Chicago but Paredes is under team control through 2027, Nico is signed through 2026 and we have plenty of potential options at 2B in the system as well so there is flexibility on who can be dealt from the depth in the system to fill another need. I'm not sure there is a single guy in the entire organization I would call untouchable if the return in the trade makes the roster better by filling a bigger need and trading from positional depth.

Jed needs to start spending some of his prospect stockpile to fill holes on the roster. The upcoming FA market for the positions the Cubs need (C, Closer, big bat) is pretty weak. The prospects that are coming generally don't fill those positions of need and are far from certain to be successful major leaguers. He should deal them before the shine wears off.

Hoerner was the full time SS in 2022 and was a top 5 defender at the position in all of baseball. Even if he regressed a bit from there, he'd still be at least average, probably a bit above average, at the position. Good to have option though!

I don't think Shaw is untouchable necessarily, but he is a better prospect than we've had come up (outside of PCA) since the last core.

I honestly think his timeline works out well with Nico's. You can trade Nico this offseason if you think Shaw is ready, or you can give it another year and work Shaw in slowly. Hopefully you have a better idea by the end of 2025 if you can go to him fulltime.

Triantos, on the other hand, I think gets traded this offseason.

I don't think we get Soto either obviously, and if we do we'll just have to figure it out. Will be a good problem to have.

First inning is always about pitch count for me. 23, not good. Needs a couple 15s to get 5. But I'd like to see him get pulled a batter too soon rather than what we've seen lately

Happ hitting .183 the last month. Dudes just as volatile as Morel. There has to be some way to convince him to leave.
Issue is he is married to a Chicago girl. Guessing she doesn't want to leave her family. Maybe the only way is trading him to his hometown Pittsburgh Pirates. Which then I'm sure he will probably come back to haunt us when he plays us 13 times a year.
